Sometimes when life is too noisy, or too sad, watching a old film can be entering one quiet compound which breeze is blowing gently. However that's how I start feel when I begin to watch The Wizard of Oz again. So far, this particular interesting film I'm talking about was release in the year 1939. The movie is above 80 years now,it's surely a grandpa😀. This film Producer was Mervyn, while the director was Victor Fleming.

However, at first, I thought that it won't be interesting again that it will boring because it's old. But as the film start, I came to realize that I have entered one world which imagination is the boss. The colours, the songs, the characters — everything was interesting to watch.

Below is my full reflection.

What felt different about the storytelling of the movie compared to newer films?

1000150213.jpg

The first thing which I notice was the speed. New films now do rush everything — action, drama, even emotion. But The Wizard of Oz take its time, like an elderly person sitting with children under the tree to tell them stories, slowly and gently.

The film did not try to shock viewers with twist up and down. It just carried you easily from one scene to another. Even the way the characters introduce themselves is slow and calm. When Dorothy meet Scarecrow, they talk, they sing, they joke, which makes it real.

Another thing is the simplicity. Today films do depend on heavy effects and heavy plot. But this one use simple set, simple costume, simple effect. Yet the story is still sweet and interesting.

The film still has clear lesson. Every people Dorothy meet represent something — courage, wisdom, love. New films, sometimes do hide their message, just to entertain people only ,but this film shows the lessons direct.

Watching it was like going back to the time which story do teach person lesson, not only to entertain.

Did the film age well, or did some parts feel outdated?

However, the film age very well, because it's still mark some lessons to us till date. But there were some part which feel updated like the special effect couldn't reach todays level. The tornado was like cloth which was turned. The talking trees look like carved wood. The flying monkeys were even funny.

But emotionally, the film is still strong. The colours are still fine. The songs is still sweet. The characters still touch a person.

The acting too still really make sense. Judy Garland, which act Dorothy, still feel real — her fear, her joy, her innocence still touch the heart.

So yes, the technology is old, but the story still strong like old house which paint has fade but the foundation is still solid. So my overall answer is that the film aged well.

What i think which made this movie a “classic”?

However, truly for a film to be classic one, it must do more than just entertainment. It must leave an unforgettable mark in the film world. The Wizard of Oz did exactly that.

Why?

1000150211.jpg

Firstly, the film break record for it time. When Dorothy leave black-and-white Kansas and enter colourful Oz, that was the first times colours enter a film. I believe that people in that 1939 will surely think that it's a magic.

Secondly, the characters don't easily or quickly be forgotten:

  • Scarecrow which think that he don't have brain.

  • Tin Man which think that he doesn't have heart.

  • Lion which fear everything.

  • Dorothy which Just want to go house.

These characters represent what humans are still facing today.

Thirdly, the themes — courage, friendship, finding yourself, and home — are things everybody understand.

And the songs, especially “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” do turn the world anthem. Even people whom never watch the film knows the song.

All these things join together makes the film to be classic.

How did the characters or themes relate to today’s world?

Even though the film is old, the message still match today.

Dorothy — Finding Home

Dorothy was finding where she belong. Many people today feel lost. Sometimes what we are finding outside is inside us already.

Scarecrow — Doubt oneself

He think that he didn't have brain, but it was him that brings smart ideas. Many people today do doubt themselves even when they knows what to do.

Tin Man — Want Love

He think that he didn't have heart, but its him that was more emotional. People today also pretend to be strong but they still need love.

Lion — Fear and Anxiety

The Lion, which we know it's a powerful and fearless animal, fear everything in this movie. However so many powerful people, do fear failure, judgment, or the unknown. But courage do show when life push us.

Wizard — Fake Power

The Wizard look powerful, but he was an ordinary man hiding behind w curtain. That's how our society hype some celebrities, influencers, politicians which doesn't have the power which we think.

The film teach that real power is inside a person, not a title.
