The memory of school days just flashed in the moment I saw this topic. It brought back so many events to my head and I can't stop laughing.

First and Aid jist as the name implies, is the immediate assistance, help, or support given to someone. This topic was taught in my primary school days, although I had already learnt it at home because my mom was a nurse who made sure her children were well informed.

What is first aid, and why is it important?

First aid is the first treatment given to an injured or an accident victim before taking him or her to a hospital. We have various kinds of accidents, lile home accident, road accidents fire accident etc all these accidents and injuries are given the first treatment (first aid) before the commencement of the proper medications.

It is important to administer first aid to help sustain the patient. If it's a minor issue, it could escalate if not given first aid while waiting for the doctors.

It also saves life easily, if in the case of severe bleeding, quick actions like CPR can differ between life and death.

It helps relive pains and discomfort and giving reassurance to the patient and bystanders before proper medications are administered.

First aid keeps the patient alive and still breathing until the arrival of the doctors.

Which simple first aid techniques do you know or have learned? When should they be used?

There are different first aid techniques I have learned;

• Apply raw eggs to burn; break an egg into a plate and with your clean hands, apply them on burn this keeps it cool. This process is used on any hot water burn and fire burn.

• For a chocking person who cannot breath well or speak well, you can stand right behind the patient as you wrap your hands around their waist and give them upward abdominal thrust.

• Minor wounds; In this case you can use spirit and cotton wool to clean the surface of the wound to keep it safe from germs.

• Snake bite; use a piece of cloth and tie around above the affected place to stop the poison from spreading.

What are the step-by-step procedures for applying the first aid techniques you have mentioned above? State them.

-For a person with burn especially hot water, break an egg or two into a plate and make sure your hands are clean, then apply to the affected place. No cold water is needed for burn.

For a person with wounds, you use cotton wool and spirit to clean the affected part and then you cal apply GV to avoid flies from touching it.

For a person chocking, just wrap your hands around their waist as you stand behind them and give a thrust.

Have you ever used first aid to help yourself or someone else? Share your experience.

Yes, I have used it to help myself. I had the privilege to assist my sis one day in cooking but unknowingly for me, I used the wrong knife which was for cutting bones to slice onions and it gave me a sharp cut. The bleeding was so severe that I rushed to the sink and washed off my hands to then got our first aid kit to help myself.

I started by controlling the bleeding with cotton wool and spirit, as the bleeding stoped, I used an ointment on it to keep it safe and that was all I could do to it because it was not a deep wound.

Why do you think everyone should learn basic first aid skills?

Well, it is very important to have the knowledge because you could be saving a life unknowingly. Having the knowledge won't be bad afterall, it is a way if stepping up your IQ and putting you in a field of people who knows.
