Watch a film that focuses on marginalized or underrepresented communities.

While discussing films related to Voices Unheard, the film Moner Manush came to my mind. Moner Manush is basically the life story of the famous Baul Lalon, the social system of that time, social degradation, people's superstitions, and hatred for people. In the meantime, Baul artist Lalon used to seek the Supreme Soul, try to awaken people. Today I am discussing that film.

The story begins with the young Lalon when he gets chickenpox and is floated on a raft of banana trees, thought dead.

A Muslim family rescues him, and in their service, the young Lalon recovers. Then the trouble arises that Lalon is caste-based. The Muslim family, without prioritizing caste and tribe, heals Lalon with humanity. That is where he meets a great saint, Lalon takes initiation from the saint.
After many days, Lalon returned to his own home. Everyone in the house thought he was dead. Now, many people are afraid to see Lalon because his people cannot be alive.

Also, the villagers who are obsessed with superstition and his mother refuse to accept him because he has taken refuge in the house of the Muslim community.

Angry and sad, he leaves the village and goes to the deep forest. There, he cuts down trees and settles. Along with this, his pursuit continues. Music was the language of protest against the injustice, prejudice, and oppression of society.

Gradually, the name of this area spread all over the country. The neglected and distressed people of the society kept coming to Lalon's forest to take shelter,

Famous lalon in his activities

A new society was created. Where there is no exaggeration about the birth identity of a person, there is no desire to be arrogant about money and wealth. Everyone in that society believed that all people in this world are equal. Everyone has equal rights.

Such is the film Man, with the intention of starting a change in society.

What new perspective or culture did this movie introduce you to?

Yes, the film introduced people to a new perspective or culture. Lalon is a famous Baul musician and philosopher. Many of his philosophies are prevalent in society. His Baul songs and philosophy are of a high standard. He is personally uneducated. But he found a guru who gave him spiritual knowledge and introduced it in society.
The Baul songs he composed are quite popular in society.
After becoming a social worker or a Baul musician, he and his followers are not much discussed in society. Only Lalon's followers practice it. Although it is unbelievable, there are many rumors about a famous person like Satya Lalon.
These events are presented in detail in the film Man of the Mind. As a result, ordinary people like us have come to know the life story of Lalon, as well as the terrible situation he had to go through at that time, which is an important part of our culture.

Were there any stereotypes challenged or broken in the film?

The movie Moner Manush depicts the life story and social system of a famous and neglected person. There were many prejudices in society during Lalon's time. He tried to highlight those prejudices through music. At that time, even though the oppressors took a stand against him, the oppressed people went to Lalon for shelter.
As a result, the forest where Lalon had built a house by cutting trees became a habitat. At that time, the opportunists were afraid; Lalon was a challenge against the prejudices they had created.
No matter how much the opportunists criticized Lalon, they knew that Lalon's popularity was a threat to them. At that time, although the liberal-minded people helped Lalon, the opportunists were completely against Lalon. And they always opposed Lalon.

Funny moment of the movie

Which character's journey did you relate to the most?

I am related to the character of Lalon in the movie Moner Manush. The role of Lalon was played by the renowned actor of West Bengal, Prosenjit. I was so impressed by the uninhibited performance of actor Prosenjit that when I watched the movie, I felt like I myself had gone back in time, witnessing everything that was going on in that society. I got so involved that I felt like I was fighting against Lalon and the inconsistencies of society.

What’s one message from the film that stuck with you?

Every scene of the movie was about highlighting various social anomalies. So, the all picture is so enjoyable, then the message I liked the most is-
There are many superstitions in our society about human birth, nobility, religious observance, marriage, and death. Lalon gave his important message on these issues.
Many men in our society want to have the company of women in the dark. Those whose company is very popular at night they looked at with hatred during the day. Their ideology is that those women are disgusting; they have no place in society.
Lalon protests against these privileged people of society. He says that the company of women who are so popular at night becomes unpopular in the light of day. Moreover, it is responsible for bringing these women to become prostitutes.

Baul Lalon in his old age
This message of Lalon is for all times. Even now, many women are loved by many in the darkness of night and are labeled as prostitutes during the day.
This message of Lalon is ingrained in my mind.
