A country faces thousands of problems every day. My country is Bangladesh and a developing country. There are also various daily problems here. I consider one of them to be very big. It is the problem of food adulteration. This problem has caught us like a spider's web. For today's challenge, I have decided to shed light on food adulteration. And I am answering the questions given by the esteemed organizer.

Identify one everyday problem in your community or country and explain some steps in solving them.

Food adulteration is one of the daily problems. The entire country is hostage to the whims of some unscrupulous businessmen. They adulterate food in all sorts of ways. Below, I am mentioning some examples of some food products that adulterate food.
Agricultural products -
Artificial fertilizers are added to the crops in the field to produce more crops. As a result, agricultural products lose their natural nutritional value.
Adulteration of fish -
Fish is the biggest source of protein. A lot of fish are cultivated in ponds and lakes. Unscrupulous traders also carry out their misdeeds there. Due to harmful chemicals, consuming that fish gradually causes various diseases in the body.
Fruits and vegetables -
Fruits and vegetables are the main source of vitamins. But without thinking about the people, unscrupulous traders add harmful chemicals to these fruits and vegetables. As a result, even though the fruits are fresh for a long time, the nutrients are lost.
In this way, food is adulterated in various ways.

I have mentioned some steps to solve food adulteration below.

Food adulteration is a serious everyday problem that affects health and trust in the food system. I have mentioned some steps to solve food adulteration below-

  • Strict laws should be implemented against food adulterators. Any sympathetic attitude towards them should be avoided.
  • The government should enforce strict food safety laws so that unscrupulous traders lose the incentive to commit adulteration.
  • Law enforcement agencies should continue regular inspections of markets, restaurants and food factories.
  • There should be a system of strict fines and punishment for offenders.
  • Regular food testing should be conducted, as well as adequate laboratories should be set up for food testing.
  • Regular testing of food items like fish, milk, oil, spices, fruits, and vegetables should be continued.
  • Mobile testing units should be used in local markets.
  • Public awareness should be increased.
  • People should be made aware of the harmful effects of adulterated food.
  • Easy ways to detect adulteration at home should be developed, and everyone should be interested in it.
  • All media should be used to increase awareness.
  • Quality training should be arranged for food vendors and producers.
  • Farmers, vendors, and food producers should be made aware of safe and ethical practices.
  • Only approved preservatives should be encouraged.
I think that if the above methods are prioritized to eliminate food adulteration, food adulteration will be greatly reduced.
Why do you think this problem still exists despite many people noticing it?-

The problem of food adulteration is a long-standing problem. Everyone knows, and everyone understands, that food adulteration has serious, harmful effects on the body and health. Still, this problem of adulteration persists and is increasing day by day.The main reasons for this are many; I present a few reasons below-

  • There are strict laws against food adulterators but they are not properly implemented. As a result, unscrupulous traders get a chance.
  • Inspections to check whether food is adulterated are irregular, and criminals often escape punishment, which encourages others to continue adulterating.
  • Due to excessive profit-seeking, food adulteration is hidden, which is not easily seen in public. As a result, adulteration cannot be eliminated.
  • Compared to the large number of markets and vendors, the number of food testing facilities and inspectors is very low. Due to this, most places remain outside the inspection.
  • Some consumers prefer cheap food without questioning the quality; this demand for low prices indirectly encourages sellers to adulterate their products. Due to this, it is difficult to control adulteration.
  • Unscrupulous traders get encouragement due to the weakness of some administrations. Adulteration continues in full swing.
  • Unscrupulous traders regularly adulterate food due to the lack of awareness among the public.
I think it is not possible to stop the process of food adulteration due to the above reasons.

In your opinion, what is the most misunderstood part of this problem?-

The most misunderstood part of the food adulteration problem is a belief, and that belief is that it is only caused by unscrupulous vendors. In reality, food adulteration is not just an individual problem, but a system-wide problem.
Here are the common misconceptions that people often have:

  • Many people think that food adulteration is solely the responsibility of the shopkeepers or vendors. But in reality, adulteration occurs at many stages -
    During cultivation
    During processing
    During storage
    During transportation
    During retailing
  • People often believe that adulterated food will look bad or smell bad. But the truth is that modern harmful chemicals are colorless, tasteless, and invisible, so we cannot detect adulterated food even if it looks fresh
  • We tend to avoid responsibility, like when we see adulteration, we think it is not our job but the administration's job. Therefore, food adulteration is carried out fearlessly by food adulterators.
  • Many people think that adulteration is limited to street food or cheap food. But the truth is that adulteration can occur in any food, even in famous brand food.
Such misunderstandings can also lead to various problems.

If you could change one mindset related to this issue, what would it be?

Food adulteration is a complex problem. It is related to our health and the safety of future generations. So we should change the mindset regarding the problem of food adulteration. To change a mindset, what I can do is -

"Food adulteration is someone else's problem, not mine" - this thought must come out. And what I can do is -

  • Many believe that the cause of food adulteration is the government, inspectors, or sellers, and it is beyond my power to prevent it. Such mentality should also be kept away from.
  • Consumers remain silent even when they suspect adulteration, which is inappropriate at times. Rather, they should always protest or boycott adulterated food.
  • If you see cheap but unsafe food, you should inform the local administration.
  • Unscrupulous traders should be exposed.
  • You should adopt a healthy mindset.
  • "As a consumer, I have power and responsibility" - this idea must be believed in my heart.

Conclusion

Just changing this one mindset will force me to be active from passive, will increase my awareness, which can weaken food adulteration. There will be a possibility of eliminating adulterated food from society.

This is really a very important and informative post. You have very well described the problem of food adulteration and explained its effects. This problem is not only related to vendors but to the entire production and supply chain. You have provided excellent guidance on key solutions for legislation, testing and public awareness. I also think that if every individual understands his responsibility and does not just remain silent, but acts with awareness and caution, then this problem can be reduced to a great extent.
