SLC-S29/W1-“Thinking and Ideas!| If You Were in Charge!”
If you were given full authority for one year in your community or country, what is the first issue you would address?
If I were given complete authority to lead my country or community for one year, the very first issue I would address would be environmental restoration through large-scale tree plantation, alongside a strong initiative to keep our surroundings free from waste and pollution.
Every day, trees are being cut down around us, yet very few are being replanted. Along the road that runs from my area toward Saidpur, there used to be many trees on both sides. Unfortunately, most of them were cut down without any clear or justified reason.
If those trees had been planted for economic or developmental purposes, then new fast-growing trees should have been planted immediately after they were removed at least for the sake of the environment. Sadly, that did not happen. Now, traveling on that road has become uncomfortable due to extreme heat and lack of shade.
Across the country, forests are being destroyed for housing, roads, industries, and fuel. As a result, we are facing excessive heat, floods, river erosion, irregular rainfall, and the harsh effects of climate change. On top of that, environmental pollution has increased due to indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Even when people are aware that this is wrong, bad habits and the lack of proper dustbins often lead to careless behavior. These problems are deeply connected, and if this situation continues, leaving behind a livable world for future generations will become increasingly difficult.
Why did you choose this issue over others?
This is a common question. Many people may ask, "why I would prioritize tree plantation and environmental protection while major issues like unemployment and poverty still exist".
My answer is simple: without a healthy environment, no development can be sustainable. If the environment suffers, the people suffer too. Even in Islam, cleanliness is highly emphasized, and planting trees is considered Sadaqah Jariyah,a continuous charity, because humans, animals, and birds all benefit from it.
Trees provide us with oxygen, reduce air pollution, help retain rainfall, protect soil fertility, and maintain ecological balance. Agriculture, public health, and even the economy depend directly on the environment.
A tree planted today continues to give benefits for decades. That is why I believe tree plantation is a decision that brings long-term well-being to both present and future generations.
What is that one difficult decision you would have to make?
The most difficult decision I would have to make is enforcing strict regulations against uncontrolled deforestation and indiscriminate waste dumping, including penalties where necessary.
This would also involve stopping illegal tree cutting and imposing fines to discourage careless behavior. Many people, especially those involved in unethical practices would be unhappy.
Personally, the deforestation along the Saidpur–Parbatipur road affected me deeply. Although such decisions may impact the wood and fuel industries in the short term, I believe they are necessary for the greater good.
If we are unwilling to make sacrifices and discipline ourselves today, our very existence may be threatened tomorrow. Development that harms nature can never be permanent.
How would you explain this decision to people who disagree with you?
I would begin by listening to those who oppose my decisions, understanding their concerns and demands. Then I would calmly explain that these policies are not meant to punish anyone, but to protect everyone’s future.
Alongside banning tree cutting, I would focus heavily on tree plantation. I would also launch cleanliness programs such as installing dustbins, managing waste properly, and exploring ways to convert waste into compost or other useful resources.
Planned forestry and social afforestation programs would be introduced. I would promote alternative fuels and sustainable wood cultivation. Research would be conducted to create new employment opportunities centered around environmental protection.
My slogan would be- “We are not stopping development; we are choosing development that benefits the environment.”
Within one year, I would launch a nationwide tree plantation campaign. Schools and colleges would be required to participate, and teachers would be officially encouraged to motivate students to plant and care for trees.
The people living in riverine areas are very vulnerable, and every year they suffer huge losses due to river erosion. To reduce and prevent the damage in these areas, I would take strong initiatives to plant trees along riverbanks.
Every citizen would be inspired to plant at least one tree, with local communities taking responsibility for maintenance. Community monitoring systems would protect old trees, and strict laws would ensure that influential individuals could not cut down valuable trees without consequences.
Conclusion
Tree plantation and environmental cleanliness are not small tasks; they are essential steps toward national progress. This responsibility ensures that future generations can think, research, and contribute to development in a healthy, green environment.
If I were in power, I would strive to leave behind an example, so future generations could say that, someone once raised their voice for a greener nation, one that stood tall like a green flag made of countless trees.
Because to me, a true leader is not someone who only speaks, but someone who acts with responsibility.
I am inviting @lirvic, @jyoti-thelight & @sualeha to take part in the contest.

I agree with your environmental mission. We know trees don't grow as quickly as pumpkins or mangoes, but they take decades, even hundreds of years, to function as large-scale water reservoirs in the soil. Their strong roots grip the soil in highlands and cliffs, thus protecting against landslides.
Officials always argue and control illegal logging, using the pretext of "we must protect, maintain, and care for the forest." Wow! In reality, they receive illegal payments under the guise of "investment" from extensive and continuous logging and forest exploitation.
There is no prosperity for the people from forest exploitation, except for the flash floods and landslides we have experienced in Aceh Province.

This is why I strongly support your mission, or whoever is in power, to launch a national-scale tree-planting campaign and other environmental initiatives. I think it would be more effective if tree planting began earlier than felling.
I wish you success in your great contest, my friend...
Thank you sir @sohanurrahman 🙏
Terima kasih kanda @yuswadinisam 🙏
Hi @sohanurrahman, welcome to thinking and ideas week 1
I love your ideas, it speak well of a good and growing government if implemented. This would save the land in a great way.
