Flood Tolerance โ Ability to withstand floods
Floods are natural disasters. That can change peopleโs lives in a matter of hours. Floods can occur due to heavy rain, rising water levels in rivers, overflowing canals. Or lack of proper drainage. During this time, homes, roads, crops, animals and many other things are affected. But if we prepare in advance. The flood damage can be reduced to a great extent.
Flood Tolerance does not just mean that an area can withstand water. It also means that our homes, roads, farms, cities, and the entire system should be able to minimize damage in the event of high water. For this, we should also give importance to water in our construction and planning.

First of all, we should protect the natural paths of water. Rivers, canals, and small rivers work to carry water forward. When garbage, soil, or unnecessary construction accumulates in these paths, the path of water stops and water starts spreading to the surrounding areas. Therefore, it is very important to clean the rivers and keep their channels open.
Poor drainage is also a major problem of flooding in urban areas. If rainwater cannot drain easily from the roads, then the roads and streets fill with water in no time. Better drainage systems, cleaning of water channels and proper urban planning can help reduce this problem.
Trees and plants also play an important role in reducing the effects of floods. Trees keep the ground firm. It also help absorb rainwater. When forests are sparse. The water flows quickly on the ground. The risk of flooding can also increase along with soil erosion. Therefore, it is important to plant more trees and protect existing green areas.
Floods can become a major problem for farmers in rural areas. Crops are damaged due to submersion in water and farmers have to suffer financial losses. Therefore, better planning, water drainage channels and selection of appropriate crops can be very beneficial in such areas. Farmers should also be given advance notice of floods so that they can move their crops, animals and essential goods to a safe place.
Flood Tolerance should also be taken into account in the construction of houses. In areas where the risk of flooding is high, it can be beneficial to build houses a little higher from the ground, have a strong foundation and understand the possible path of water. Electrical systems and other essential things should also be placed in a place where the possibility of water reaching them is low.
The most important thing during floods is the safety of human life. People should know where to go in case of danger, which route to take to reach a safe place and what essential things to keep with them. Keeping clean drinking water, essential food, flashlights, first aid equipment and important documents in a safe place at home is also a good precaution.

Both the government and the public should work together on this issue. It is not only the responsibility of the government to make flood prevention arrangements, but the common people should also consider it their responsibility to keep their area clean and not throw garbage into the water channels. A small carelessness can sometimes cause big damage.
We cannot completely prevent floods, but we can certainly prepare better to reduce their effects. Strong infrastructure, clean water channels, more trees, better drainage, proper construction and timely information can reduce many problems during floods.
Flood Tolerance teaches us that we should be prepared for natural disasters instead of just fearing them. A little preparation done today can save us from big damage tomorrow.
