Irrigation matters so much
That word irrigation might sounds a bit complicated especially to anyone that has little to no experience with farming but it is not just about watering crops. Millions of people could never be fed if not for such a system.
Dry land becomes productive on purpose, that's how I see irrigation.
Someone understood that waiting for rain would not help and already farming is unpredictable, climate and weather patterns makes it worse. So he or she probably decided to build tools and pipes, moving water where needed and when needed. This decision is what changed agriculture forever.
You read in the Bible and they say "there was farming in the land" because rain was not coming for a long time, that just means that ancient civilization was not using irrigation.
Irrigation is necessary for each stage of development of the plant.
When you're preparing your soil to plant seeds, the moistness is necessary to make the work and growth easier. After that, water becomes very important for germination. The germination process is easy to understand too, the seed absorbs water and begins growing from it. Should it fail, the next processes become pointless.
Then, it is time for the roots to grow. Their growth is better when they receive water from time to time. And we know each plant has its own amount of water requirements to be healthy. A good healthy root will keep the plant firmly in the soil and let it take all necessary nutrients from it.
If you get the chance, try to compare two fields irrigated evenly or unevenly. Even without being an expert, you will be able to notice a difference. The plants will show you the results.
When the harvesting time comes, you will find out whether your efforts were fruitful or not. Irrigation will show itself in the amount of the yield and its quality. No one will be able to hide this information until the end of the year, the yield will either appear or not.
This situation is true not for one farmer or piece of land only. We are seeing that the global population is still growing and nothing will stop that or decrease that but the available land areas can't increase constant.
I saw a video on YouTube where there are plans to build underground cities and sky cities, that may be the only way to allow for more space but that's a futuristic concept that if we don't work on from now we're still doomed to overpopulate.
The way to deal with drought is through irrigation. It's best that if we know plants needs a resource to grow, we have full control over that resource because we depend on the plants so we should be able to determine our yields more.
There are some areas that are dry and useless land, but if we get smarter with irrigation, those places can start feeding the world.
