What is Backyard Gardening?

The agricultural term, backyard gardening simply means the act of farming or growing crops and plants, somewhere in the yard around your home or house.
It is a form of subsistence farming where most of the time, the plants grown are not for sale, but to be eaten by the farmer after harvest.
It is a small scale farming, requiring a very low land since the crops are grown in the yard, a spare land behind or beside the house.

What are the importance of Backyard Gardening.

To me, I feel this form of subsistence farming has more advantages to importance, to disadvantages or limits. Some of its importance includes:

  • It is cheaper as it does not or rarely require the use of large machineries like tractors, planters and the likes.
  • Low capital required to start up or sometimes no capital required
  • It makes use of low labour. It does not even need labourers hired to be worked on. One person might do just fine; the farmer's family members could even take part.
  • It requires low land. There is no need to purchase a new farmland as somewhere around the house with good soil would do just fine.
  • Backyard gardening is a a means of carrying out physical exercises which does improve the functionality of the body and health at whole.
  • It provides the farmer and his family with food security where does not need to rely on buying groceries every now and then.

Talk about the simple plants you can grow in your home.

some and not all of the simple plants or species of plants that can be grown in backyard gardening are listed below:

  • Vegetables: this includes spinach, lettuces, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, fennels, asparagus, celeraics, squash, beetroots, cabbages, leeks, mushrooms and lots more.
  • Fruits: fruits grown in the backyard could include pawpaws, pear, bananas, pineapple, strawberries, dwarf lemons and so on.
  • Spices: the likes are onions, garlics, peppers, gingers, scent leaves.
  • Herbs: in form of parsley, mint, basil leaves tea leaves.
