Pick and Write [Agricultural Word] #08: Mulch

When I was a child I spent most of my holiday time with my grandparents who have a little house in a small village and for me it was always a lot of fun.
Now when I am grown up I can understand that it was very good that they showed me how to look after garden, how to make the garden tidy. That is why in spring there were a lot of colours in garden due to many different flowers. There were some wild field flowers and of course, some that we planted because they were beautiful like tulips and roses, actually they are my favourite.
When I saw that word for today “mulch” I already knew what is that because I was also very curious when I heard that then I asked my grandpa when we were in garden, especially in autumn. I can remember that it was time when in September we were cleaning the flower beds, of course, there and some weed and also the plants had some branches that needed to be cut back to bring in shape for the period of winter. That was the time when my grandpa mentioned the word “mulch”. When I asked he explained that usually in winter nobody knows how cold it will be and often the roots of some plants and flowers can be frozen then they may not survive. The soil may get hard and in order to help the plants to survive it is important to create something like a “blanket”, that is usually done using dry leaves from trees or chopped barks from trees or even straw. We used the bark for our garden.
I remember how in spring I was very curious to see if the plants and flowers will come back and to my surprise our garden roses and tulips all grow again. That is why I just recommend for everyone who have garden they should use mulch for protection of your garden plants.
