AS UNTO THE LORD
Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

One feature of wood and straw is that they are heaped upon each other and hence they become obvious making it possible to see them from even afar off. However, this is not the case of gold; hardly will you see heaps of gold displayed for all to see. Even though a great worth of gold might still remain inconspicuous, it is more treasurable than a conspicuous heap of wood or straw.
This is the standard by which our works will be compared with. Some do great things that are conspicuous for men to see and applaud them but before God, these may just be wood or straw and hence will not stand the test of fire. Others on the other hand may do great things which like gold, may not be seen by most but before God, these will be precious and stand the test of fire.
Therefore, it is important that for all we do, we do it as unto the Lord and not after the vain glory of man.
LIFE APPLICATION
Do not do things to receive applauds from men but from God, the eternal judge.
