across societies, girls simply become women through physical maturity. Men on the other hand must pass through a rite of manhood

No. I'd hate to make you feel less of a man... but believe it or not women go through rites of passage too @sirknight.

    That's a pretty good idea - I would have to commit a decent amount of time, but it would make an interesting article.
