Things being what they are, what was the psalmist shouting out for in Psalm 4:6? "Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!" That petition is addressed especially when God causes the eyes of our souls, on this side of the cross, to see the wonderfulness of God even with Jesus Christ as uncovered in the gospel. So we were visually impaired. We were visually impaired and found in the gospel nothing convincing. That is the route every one of you began in this world. Nothing. You didn't see anything convincing at all about God or Christ.

We thought we had a superior god than God. We thought we had a superior gospel. We thought we had a superior energy. All our nourishment and wine — sustenance and wine is perpetual. At that point God shone in our souls and the light of God was lifted up notwithstanding Jesus, and we got up. We got up, much the same as the psalmist said would happen if the light shone on us.

"We thought we had a superior gospel. At that point God shone in our souls."

Furthermore, when we arose, we didn't just observe profound magnificence with the eyes of the heart — which we did. We additionally noticed the sweet otherworldly fragrance of Christ with the noses of our heart (2 Corinthians 2:15). We tasted the fantastic decency of God with the tongues of our heart (1 Peter 2:2– 3). We touched the mending edge of the piece of clothing of God with the finger of our heart (Matthew 9:20). We heard the tune of God cheering over us with happiness in Zephaniah 3:17.

Presently, I ask, what's the point? What's the purpose of another aroma of Christ, another essence of awesome consideration, another touch of wholeness, another sound of God's tune, another sight of God's splendid, grinning face? What's the purpose of all that erotic dialect?

The fact is that the most fundamental, most basic qualification between the Christian and the non-Christian isn't new choices. You don't choose to taste. Not new choices of the will, not new deeds of the hands, not new tenets of the psyche, but rather another savor the experience of the heart — another take pleasure in otherworldly magnificence, profound taste, profound touch, otherworldly aroma, otherworldly solid.

What's more, from that new energy, outperforming all the delights of the world, stream the springs of life.
