Humility is a fundamental value
Pride was the sin of the devil
Perhaps that is why the call to humility is unique and prominent in Scripture.
It is true that all of Jesus' behavior is a role model for every believer. However, he only once explicitly said that we should learn something from him: Learn from me that I am gentle and humble of heart (Mat 11:29).
That is, if there is something we can learn from Jesus and something that makes us like him, it is humility. Paul exhorted us to humble ourselves as Christ humbled himself (Philippians 2: 5-8) and also taught that the most worthy attitude of the believer is humility (Eph 4: 1).
In one of his writings, Augustine said: "If you ask me what is the most essential thing in religion, I will tell you: first humility, second humility and third humility." But the father of the church only echoed the clear testimony of Scripture. Jesus, Paul, Peter, David and Solomon (to name a few) gave us clear evidence that humility occupies a prominent place among the Christian virtues.
But how can we describe humility? Here a definition:
dependence on God ... true humility, by its very nature, does not dare to live without the grace of God and much less boasts of its achievements. In considering his fragile condition the humble know that he needs divine power and seeks it with despair. Humility recognizes your deep need and dependence on God. When contemplating what he has, he knows that the only source of his good is his Lord and Savior.
and a desire to glorify him ... humility is overwhelmed by the mercy he has received and what he tries most is to recognize God in all his ways. His greatest desire is to glorify him. Humility does not feel comfortable with self praise or boasting, for it fears to rob God of its glory.
The humble person recognizes his dependence on God; he does not seek dominion over his fellows, but learns to give them value over himself. The apostle Paul once said that we should not have a higher concept of ourselves than we should have. This is the humble one, he does not look at his own, but that of others. He comes to the aid of the afflicted, extends his hand to the needy. It comes to serve and has not been served.
It's good to see you again here @Josegracia, humility makes us great!
