Hi guys welcome to my blog today as I unfold my medical virtual assistant simulation journey with you.

Trust you are doing great I'm here to update you all on my simulation journey. It has not been easy with a physical stress plus the online stress and everything. I need to put in place so many things for my lessons to run smoothly but I'm grateful that I'm on it and very soon I'll be done but in the meanwhile let's share what I learnt last week in my week 1.

I've been working as a virtual assistant in healthcare company but there are some certificates I was asked to submit but I didn't have and then decided to register for some courses that I have not done. So I decided to pick up this simulation class so that I can be equipped to work as a full-time medical virtual assistant and have full knowledge of some required tools.

What I Learned This Week

  • Medical Transcription
  • Medical Documentation process
  • Medical Office workflow

In the medical transcription; I learned how I can listen to recorded medical conversations between providers and patients. How to interpret the details correctly using medical terminology. It sounds simple at first when I heard it, but it actually takes a lot of time and concentration to write it out.

I noticed that a little mistake can cause a lot of damage so while given task for the week, I was attentive to the video and transcribed accurately.

Documentation; After transcription, I documented it as a real medical notes like SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) and DAP (Data, Assessment, Plan) notes, as well as referral letters and discharge summaries. It wasn't easy but I needed to do it so that I learn, the task was given and I carried it out successfully.

All work design by me

These documents consist of all the patient’s journey, their symptoms, diagnosis, and even care plan gotten from the doctor in a video call. Then all this information needs to be written correctly with no errors and it has to include medical terminology.

In this documentation you don't need to assume anything because it has to do with patients health condition, so a clear headset and a quiet environment is required to listen to the video and transcribed well.

Learning to document correctly made me realise I need to appreciate how much trust is given to healthcare support professionals, so we need to maintain that HIPAA policy.

Then in medical office procedures; I learned the difference daily operations that keep each virtual healthcare facility well organized. Starting from scheduling patient appointments to managing patient records to handling good communications and ensuring HIPAA compliance. So much coordination is required in each patient visit before they step into a doctor’s office virtually.

Lesson learned

This first week taught me technical skills and also reminded me that being a Medical Virtual Assistant means a lot, it is more than just typing or managing patient data. It’s about being reliable, compassionate, focused and being detail-oriented. It’s also about helping patients receive the maximum care they deserve and also helping doctors have the best information to help the patients recovery.

Then the simulation sessions were interesting, they look real as if I'm actual in a clinic listening to patient and documenting their complaints. The hands on practical are encouraging.

Next week, I'm looking forward to explore Electronic Health Records (EHR), it is a tool used in managing workflow while observing HIPAA.

I'm supper excited to unfold this journey with you all and I will be more focused to update all the coming weeks ahead as well. I want to inspire someone here to join in this journey it is very sweet.

Stay tuned as I will be updating next week journey
