My Week 2 and 3, Medical Virtual Assistant Simulation Program Experience
Hi guys welcome to my blog today I'm going to be telling you how my week two and week three of my medical simulation program was. I was too busy with work and other activities that I couldn't update you on week two so I'm going to be joining with two and with three.
So this 2 weeks I spent it in learning about EHR/EMR management and basic coding knowledge.
So this week we use simple practise and therapy notes as to to practise. Simple Practice and therapy notes are an Electronic Health Record system that is widely used by the medical personnel such as clinics, hospitals or private practice to communicate with patients.
So this week, I was given a task to simulate real patient management workflows using the simple practice and it felt just like I'm working in a real clinic environment. I will show you my work samples.

Screenshot of my task for week 2
To perform this tasks, I was to pay attention to how I can do this in a real clinic. First of all we practise how to make a phone call with a patient and book an appointment. So I had a simulation call with one of my colleague, I was talking to her as if I was talking to a patient asking her all the necessary informations that I need to create an account and also book an appointment for her to meet with a doctor virtually.
So while making the call, I write down some details like her name, her age, date of birth, why she's booking for appointments, some symptoms that she got, her Gmail information, phone number and the rest. So this will help me to book a successful appointment for her.
Then say she was a new patient, had details are not seen in our clinic so I have to create account or patient profile for her, all this steps I took is being shown on a long video because I did a recording of myself performing these ducks so too well to wash the video from loom link that I'll be dropping below.
Loom video recording of myself
Please watch the recording of myself exploring the patient workflow, I created patient profile, send consent, schedule appointment, send reminder, and also explore the patient portal. Remember this is a simulation profile not real patient.
So after creating other accounts, I send out consent forms for the patients to fill so this form will be sent to the patient's email granting her permission to login and also fill some details that were not given out through the call. Then she has to sign some documents granting permission for consultation virtually.
So after that I shadow and appointment for her so she can meet with If physician and talked about her health issues through a video call.
I also explore the patient portals on how the patient will sign all these concerns form and how to communicate with a patient in the app or through email.

Week 3 coding
In medicals there are some codes that are used to write a report, This clothes are medical quotes and it is understood by not all medical professionals but by people who have learnt this coding.
Medical coding is a large cause on its own and it is widely practised virtually so as a virtual assistant or a virtual medical assistant you you need to know coding because there are some work areas there are some clinics that really work using that.
We don't really have much on this part because it was a basic knowledge of it so I understand some areas and the scope of understanding different codings. We didn't also have task on this but we were told to explore therapy notes. Therapy note is also an electronic health record system so I practise it it's just the same as simple practise.
There are 6 HIPAA mandated codes set so I understood them and what they stand for where they are used and when to used them. So should incase I see it on a prescription or I'm asked to transcribe a medical report or even ask to write a report using codes.
- ICD-10-CM
- CPT CODES
- HCPCS Level II
- ICD-10-PCS
- CDT
- NDC
They comes with numbers to specify a particular disease condition and the severity.
It was really challenging because it was my first class in the medical coding, but I need to register a coding class to know more about it.
I enjoyed my week 2 and week 3 let's look forward to week 4 and 5. Thank you for following along.
