A take on Kraken, xStocks and USDG

Maybe you know about this possibility, to trade tokenized equities, or with regards to xStocks, US stocks.

Kraken makes this possible for EU citizens.

I did some research and am taking some steps.

Eligibility for EU

EU citizens are fully eligible for Kraken xStocks because:
Kraken has officially rolled out xStocks across the European Union.
xStocks are available only to EU-based clients who pass an appropriateness assessment or qualify as professional investors.

Fees that apply to EU

No trading fees when buying xStocks with USD or USDG on Kraken.
No broker commissions (because these are tokenized certificates, not traditional shares).
Possible spreads between buy/sell prices (market-dependent).
On-chain fees only if you withdraw to a Solana wallet (usually tiny).
No custody fees on Kraken.
Nothing hidden in the fee schedule, but note: you don’t earn cash dividends, so there is no withholding tax applied at source.
You don’t own the underlying shares, so you avoid U.S. ADR/custody fees — but also lose shareholder rights.

Dividends for EU users (the biggest difference from real stocks)

Dividends are automatically reinvested into the token.
Your token balance increases proportionally via a multiplier system.
No cash dividend payouts.
No shareholder rights (voting, meeting participation).

Regulatory situation for EU

xStocks are are tokenized certificates, not actual shares.
They mirror U.S. stock prices 1:1 but do not grant ownership of the underlying asset.
EU users get exposure to U.S. stocks without a U.S. broker.
EU users avoid U.S. tax complications (W‑8BEN, withholding).
EU users rely on the issuer’s custody and regulatory framework rather than direct share ownership.

Trading hours and flexibility, EU users get:

24/5 trading on Kraken (Monday–Friday).
24/7 trading if you withdraw to a Solana wallet and use DeFi.
Fractional investing starting from 1 EUR.

The Pros are obvious, so here are some

Cons

The lack of shareholder rights.
Regulatory uncertainty and the reliance on a custodian.
Are tokenized stocks going to remain compliant long-term?

What fees apply when buying xStocks with crypto? According to Kraken’s official xStocks FAQ:

Zero fees only when buying with USD or USDG.

If you buy xStocks using crypto (BTC, ETH, USDC, etc.), Kraken applies standard Instant Buy fees, which are:

1% trading fee, plus a spread (varies by asset, volatility, and order size)

USDG

USDG is the first fully MiCA‑compliant USD stablecoin available across the European Union, issued by Paxos Issuance Europe and supervised by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN‑FSA).

As a "regional" stablecoin, it is not listed on some of the CEXs, as Binance, for instance. There are more reason to this, too. I'll probably cover that topic in a separate post.
