The train conductor, the fairy tale ghost
The other day when I wrote about dreams, I actually wanted to tell you something. Something about a certain person. Because it felt so unreal, as if you met some fairy tale character that doesn't really exist.
As if this could no longer exist.
You know, I have mentioned before that my idea, feeling and perception of things is as orderly and logical as it does not coincide with the reality here. And in fact, maybe I am the character from the fairy tales that does not exist and cannot exist in the reality that surrounds me here... But anyway, that's not the topic of my post today.
The topic is a train conductor whom we met twice - on our two train trips to Plovdiv.
As I have written before, poverty and low wages break people and they begin to behave in a certain and specific way. Especially at their workplace. Hostile and not doing their job well (so it's no wonder that I'm so impressed by people who really do their job well - from the street sweeper to the counter attendant in some government institution.)
Fitting into the well-known local maxim originating from Communism: They lie to us that they pay us, and we lie to them that we work.
And here, once again, it is clearly visible how this political regime simply cannot work.
I've always wondered how and why certain women work in post offices, for example. The salary there is very low, and yet such positions are obtained with many connections. How and why certain people work in the police administration, the administration of the national health fund, in any state administration, in kindergartens, etc. The situation is the same. These are a kind of prestigious positions with very low pay that can only be taken by people who can afford it financially. It's an interesting and a kind of inexplicable case, isn't it? 🤔
The rest who do not have these financial means simply have to accept that they will live in poverty, relying on the salary, regardless of how many hours they work, where they work, and how they work.
Same with the conductor we met on our two trips to Plovdiv.
With my constant observations of the people around me, I cannot remain indifferent when I meet a certain type of people, those who are already, in my opinion, a disappearing species.
The conductor I'm talking about was relatively young, extremely kind, meticulous in doing his job - the way he painstakingly writes everything by hand on the tickets he sells, the explanations he gives to passengers' endless questions - with patience and a smile.
Well-mannered and communicative, with a sense of humor, with this, as well as with his appearance, he looked like a ghost out of a lamp or some other fairy-tale character. The train was his element, his domain, his place, where he fixed and arranged everything with a smile and ease.
A little on the edge of insanity, of course. If I met this person outside, outside this train, and especially in the dark, I would probably be scared, I would not want him to talk to me. 😃 I don't know if I can explain this to you in any rational and understandable way. You have to walk the edge of insanity to live this way and do what you do. The salaries of even train drivers are low, what about the salary of a conductor.
Which means only one thing - long live the crazy people, driven by various motives, who, despite everything, do their job well. If it weren't for them, this country would have disappeared long ago.

![]() | Soul's Detour is a project started by me years ago when I had a blog about historical and not so popular tourist destinations in Eastern Belgium, West Germany and Luxembourg. Nowadays, this blog no longer exists, but I'm still here - passionate about architecture, art and mysteries and eager to share my discoveries and point of view with you. |
Personally, I am a sensitive soul with a strong sense of justice.
Traveling and photography are my greatest passions.
Sounds trivial to you?
No, it's not trivial. Because I still love to travel to not so famous destinations.🗺️
Of course, the current situation does not allow me to do this, but I still find a way to satisfy my hunger for knowledge, new places, beauty and art.
Sometimes you can find the most amazing things even in the backyard of your house.😊🧐🧭|
