STEEMFEST2 - LISBON TIPS
I hope my little lines touch you guys that already are in Lisbon (You know that sometimes Lisbon is called LX?) or you guys planning your trip.
Pleeeeease.
Lisbon, as any tourist city, have some dark points, as an ex-tourist (living here in Lisbon as tourist for 1 year, now after 10 years, living in Lisbon I consider my self a half “Lisboeta”), please guys take a special attention in your wallets and bags and purses, I am not telling you that Lisbon is dangerous place, nobody will point you a weapon and ask you your wallet but you can easily “lost” it inside the tram or bus.
Looking to the tips posted by @roelandp, I would like to ask to pay a special care in: Tram 28, I read lots comments about pickpockets, they look like other tourist, they are clean people, with good cloths, etc. Some times they act solo but some times act in pairs, like a pretty big boobs woman and a little discret guy...
Ohh...
Another thing, be aware and avoid, those guys that will approach you, to “offer” sunglasses and haxixe, pleeeeease, they are Scam, do not buy anything from these guys, they also will try to sell a Rolex for 100€... FAKE
So more tips for you.
- Make sure that you have your memory clean, because Lisbon have lots of place to take shots;
- Make sure that you have charged battery and do not forget your camera charger (Portugal Standard is 230 V, formerly 220 V and our power jack have type F and type C );
- Make sure that you are bringing with you your cellphone charger and your powerbank;
Little Shop
- In Lisbon if you need to buy something, like food to eat in your room, like water, pizza, soda, wine, bread or some stuff like that, try find mini markets called “Pingo Doce” or “Minipreço” they are the best option, if you found a "Continente, Jumbo, Modelo, BomDia, Intermarche they are good too.
MiniPreço
Pingo Doce
Exploring
Probably you will visit BELÉM, to eat those PASTÉIS DE BELÉM, (also called pastel de nata, pastel de nata and pastel de Belém are same thing, but those Pastel de Belém have a history behind, have a secret mystery in your conception) but if you are in Belém, to eat the traditional Pastel de Belém (there is single place selling the Special One. Map here), probably you will find a huuuuuge queue next the door, so bypass the queue, get inside and ask the employee, where you can get a free table, so inside you can sit e enjoy your fuckinamazing Pastel de Belem.
Outside Queue:
Inside Tables:
As we are all tech guys (our mostly), we should take care with shared WiFi, I know sad stories from WebSummit guys, getting hacked after the event. Places like Bairro Alto, Expo, Shopping Centers and etc, usually have FREE Wi-Fi and sometimes you will see 2 WIRELESS Network with same name, pay special attention on the unlocked WiFi, someone could be a "Man In The Midle". I know that is impossible travel and stay 5 days without Internet, so the best option is buy a SIM Card in Lisbon, if you want a temporary one try LYCAMobile.
Hippotrip*
A different way to cross the River
Castelo de São Jorge
Be prepared to walk... walk... and walk. Buy some water, try to buy in Minipreço or Pingo Doce, they are really cheap here.
Tram 28
This is a very touristic tram because its route crosses the whole city. It is very touristic, it is often packed and it’s a favorite spot for pickpockets. It worth the journey, just try taking less busy times such as the morning or the evening. Take care you belongs.

Amazing:
Parque das Nações
Try visit:
Save some time to Walk along the River Tejo. You will see Microsoft HQ in Lisbon, the longest bridge in europe "Ponte Vasco da Gama", PAVILHÃO ALTICE and FIL (place where they will run WebSummit).
River Tejo:
Microsoft:
Ponte Vasco da Gama:
Pavilhão Altice:
Museums
If you like places like Museums, take a look in "Museu da _Eletricidade" near Belém.
Elevador Santa Justa
Beauty, History, Touristic but lonnnnnng queues, if you have tide schudle...avoid
Do not bring with you xits that you will not use, like fidelity cards from a local store on your home town. Leave your unnecessary stuff in your hotel.
Eating
** Please CHECK food price BEFORE order. **
- Avoid Restaurants in Rua Augusta and any other without TripAdvisor review.
- 99% of the restaurants serve a little bask with bread and butter or 3 or 4 differents "pates" and some times cheese or special salsichs or shirimps, IT IS NOT FREE, if you eat it, they will charge you, so I sugest, if you have no interrest on it, just say "Este pode levar, não queremos" or if you want just check the price first on Menu, I saw restaurants in "Rua Augusta" charging something like 10€ for 4 Shirimps.
- Lisbon have Italian food, Chinese, Japonese, Indian, Mexican, Greek etc. also plastic food too of corse, McDonalds, BurguerKing, PizzaHut etc, but seriously, let thoose for a super emergency.
- Sea food is Amazing
- Do not try "Rodizios" you are in Portugal, let this one for Brazil.
Some dishs that you should try:
- Cozido a Portuguesa
- Francesinha
- Bitoque
- Polvo a Lagareiro
- Carne de Porco Alentejano
- Percebes
- Tostas
Some cakes that you should try:
- Pastel de Nata
- Bola de Berlim
- Pão de Deus
- Mil Folhas
- Jesuita
- Tarte de Nata
Note: You certainly will find the cakes above in each bakery (pastelaria) that you enter, if not... The quote "early birds..." will serve as a glove, but if find some bakery selling Ovos Moles, Queijadinhas de Sintra, Toucinho do Ceu, try those one too.
Lisbon night
"Bairro Alto" (First choice no doubt). Ohhh if you like drink, more than your Kidneys are capable to process, do not go alone to avoid embarrassing situations, and DO NOT DRIVE, ask for a Uber or a similar, in Lisbon we have at least 3 different services like that.
Ask for "Docas" in Santos (it is a bunch of places a long the river where you can sit, eat, drink and enjoy an amazing view).
Should try in Cais do Sodré a place called "Mercado da Ribeira" (They close a little bit early) it is a place with around 40 different restaurants side by side, imagine a big square and restaurants around it, so you go, choose, pay and back to midle of this square to sit in a long shared table, oh, be prepared here :) you will find, people from the 4 corners of the world, single, couples, families, probably you will make at least 1 new friend.
Pink Street in Cais do Sodré, this place is a littlebit similar at "Mercado da Ribeira" but it is outdoor, an entire street (without cars) where you can stay late in the night. In this spot you should take a look in "Pensao Amor" , the most iconic place in Cais do Sodré.
A trap you should look out for in Lisbon are Fado Clubs or Fado Houses. These houses are restaurants where you can listen to live Fado. They are some brilliant ones, but there are also some that don’t have the best food or the best singers or even some places that overcharge. I have really nice feedback from:
O Faia
Maria da Mouraria
Marques da Sé
Senhor do Vinho
Tasca do Chico
Do not bring with you xits that you will not use, like fidelity cards from a local store on your home town. Leave your unnecessary stuff in your hotel.
Ohh! When I am writing this post, I saw a guy in Metro/subway, he is playing a "sanfona" and have a little dog in his shoulder, he is normally asking for coins, but behind this scene, he will look inside your wallet/bag/purse and if he sees money inside, probably you will be marked and his friend will follow you to try scamm you. Just let him pass.
I know that is about STEEMFEST, but you will love so much Lisbon that you will want back. For who is having issues to find a place to stay, take a look on Facebook about groups called "Apartamentos para alugar em Lisboa". I can help if you want.
Telephones: For an Emergency call to 112 (it is like the US 911)... JUST FOR EMERGENCY, like rouberys, accidents, etc, do not call to ask general information.
Transportation
- Lisboa Card (the city tourist pass) is the best investment on a trip to Lisbon. It allows you to visit most of the main attractions and ride public transportation for free, and is available for 24, 48, or 72 hours. There are a few sights that are not free with the card, but those still offer reduced admission. Order it below and pick it up at the airport or at the main tourism office (Lisboa Welcome Center) in Praça do Comércio. It comes with a free booklet with information on all the attractions.
Others:
Update section:
- Try the Hippobus Hippotrip
- I found lots of information on the Internet calling our river "TAGUS" it is not, the correct name is TEJO.
- ADD a small video about MERCARDO DA RIBEIRA DTUBE
- Tram and Bus you should use the front door to enter.
- Tram and Bus you CAN buy a ticket inside, from the driver or you can use a prepaid ticket.
- In subway and boat you can choose any door :) but you will need a prepaid ticket to get access to gates, you easyly can buy it from automatic machines or can buy it from salesman near the gate.
- When you decide goes to Belem, ask to a local WHERE, You need to take a bus, if you just ask WHAT bus, it will not help, they probably will say: 15 but the 15 goes to Oeste side and Leste side, every day I see tourist taking the bus to the wrong side.
I think that you have a nice guide here. Please forgive me if I am missing some thing. Leave a comment, we have 7 days to improve this post. ahhh (shy mod) sorry my english, I have some limitations about write big posts in english.
Thanks guys... Enjoy your stay.

Oh.. Ann.. @all, really thankyou for all your support guys, I am not expecting that this post could cross 50$, because it was pointed to a limited group, people involved with SteemFest and coming to Lisbon but for my surprise it was a great conquer, I know that money is really nice reward but belive or not, my greatest satsfaction goes to my reputation, jumped to 50, it is (at least for me) a great responsibility, make me feel like "I am someone that people can trust!"
