In place of teflon tape, I have used a cake of soap.
Take a bar of soap. rub it (dry) thoroughly around the threads (after cleaning them, as suggested earlier)
Also, inspect closely for debris or misshapen plastic. Bright lights and patience can pay here.

I guess some lubrication may help. I'm getting another hose to try next
The soap isn't for lubrication, as I understand it, it functions the same as teflon tape (helping with the seal)
