I don't think a referral program would bring much spam.
Why do you not want bots? I think bots will be an essential part of steemit's success.
New referred user's (whether human or bot) won't hold much weight until they add funds, make quality posts, or are able to upvote quality posts beforehand.
Auto-likes won't be rewarded well because they are not going to be able to only like the quality posts. They way the system works is if a user can upvote an article that later receives high quality/volume, then they will benefit. If they can't pinpoint these articles, then they shouldn't be able to game the system.
I'm sure auto comments would get downvoted unless if they add quality to the experience.
Thanks for asking this! I meant to ask this yesterday and it slipped my mind. I guess we do benefit by referring people simply from there being more people to upvote our content/comments/contributions, so in a way that's a referral program in itself. ;)
We have been considering such a system, but it will not come about until the website is out of beta. We must be careful to prevent any such system from being gamed and backfiring.
That said, every user you refer becomes a potential voter on your content.

Please let us know if there is any update on this. I run a number of recreational websites with high traffic but low conversion. I suspect Steemit could draw in a lot of peeps from them, but how could I take a cut on that? Perhaps just linking to an introduction article for now, I guess. A referral program would be amazing though.
I Googled to see if there was any such referral program. Ready to share Steemit with the world. Just curious about when Beta ends and think even if just cents per person a referral benefit of some sort though maybe not monetary would be good.

I think it would only avoid fake account, but not fake Upvote and comments.

There are some proposals to change the protocol to address the issue.

Well there are bots on here now
I could think of many way to get by fake accounts but then again anyone could put in time and effort to get free crypto at this point.

When Gmail required invitations to join and paypal gave everyone 10$ in the early days was brilliant, adding a LOT of virality to their expansion.
Suprised steemit haven't done this yet!
I have friends who have signed up, but it'd taking ages for the registration to be approved
Why not implement a proof of person system. I think the boat for major adoption is being missed here.
