Trending Club - How much $$ does it take?
Want to be on the Hot or Trending page?
It takes money. Lots of it. And every so often, luck. Let me show you.
Here's what I did
- Opened the Hot and Trending pages
- Clicked the profile link for each hot/trending post on the first page
- Opened the Wallet page for each profile
- Pasted the estimated account value for each profile into a spreadsheet
- Calculated the average, minimum and maximum
Here's what I found
Trending page
$81,539.88 is the average value of an account on the first page of Trending
- 19 profiles
- $81,539.88 average account value
- $270,904.31 maximum account value
- $0.85 minimum account value *(explanation below)
Hot page
$68,163.12 is the average value of an account on the first page of Hot
- 19 profiles
- $68,163.12 average account value
- $309,076.67 maximum account value
- $314.19 minimum account value
This is just quick and dirty number gathering but as you can see, it sure does seem like to get into Hot or Trending territory it is very much pay-to-play here. The only outlier here was the account valued at $0.85 which just happened to be a brand new account that got lucky with their introduceyourself post likely voted up by some movers and shakers.
Draw your own conclusions with these numbers, they're quite eye opening.
It seems like to me, whenever I look at the Trending page, it's always a handful of the same people. I think I've checked it out a few times over the last couple weeks and the same people are for the most part creating the same type of content and getting upvoted a lot. So are you saying the only way to get on the Trending page is to have a valuable account? If so that's kind of a bummer
No not necessarily, you don't have to have a valuable account, it's just more normal. I hit the Trending page for a few days because my Typora post was submitted to @curie. I was also able to submit a few of my wifes articles to curie and one of her posts was accepted. Neither of us had/have valuable accounts so it's definitely possible to hit the Hot/Trending pages, just not typical.
Oh ok, that's good to know! Maybe I can submit mine to Curie also, I'll look into it. Thanks @britt.the.ish
After being here a month, I've also noticed that the trending pages seem to be the same handful of people 90% of the time.

Nice analysis. It looks like there are some big whales out there. However, I believe in steemit and I believe that people should follow who they enjoy listening to. Thus, within their own feed, there should be trending and hot categories for the followed.
Hey @kyungjaechoo, I definitely agree that having Hot/Trending categories for your own personal feed would be a great way to improve the value of the feed and the concept of Trending posts.
I was on there with a post at $160 - been here 2 weeks so my account value is quite low. It had quite a few votes
Thats awesome, it would seem that you would be an outlier as well, I'd consider yourself lucky! We're you on the first page of those categories or some other page?
First page for just under a day
