The volatility is high because:

1. there is a significant change in the platform, which should improve user acquisition and retention
2. the underlying technical change directly affects exchanges, which need to upgrade themselves too if they want to continue trading

Two source of disruption, actually.

As for the actual changes implemented in this hardfork, I'm one of the guys that tell a different story: especially the new account creation feature will massively change things around here.
