How does someome like me succeed on steemit?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

This is something I keep asking myself. I want to participate but really don't know how to get anywhere. I started with a few simple reddit style threads which got little or no notice. Then I tried doing an article on a site I like. It got 8 up votes and only 1 reply. Got pretty discouraged by that. Replied to some threads and was about to give on on steemit entirely until a friend got me to try again. Went back to doing a few small reddit style things or questions type posts. Of course nothing but didn't' really expect much. Well maybe on one about flagging of posts. It didn't' get much notice but others like it that came after it did so guess it was bad timing. My next move was to make a meme. Put quite a bit of thought into it, took some time and came up with what I thought was something good. People I know liked it almost no one else did. It ended up with 12 votes and 4 replies. Quick post about Bitterx opening ETC trading that took 15 seconds got just as much attention. Next step was some whale humor just for the heck of it. Put some time hoping it would get at least some attention but again almost nothing, Finally yesterday I did a serious post. Put quite a bit of though into it. Had that feeling of success when I checked 20 minutes later and it had over 40 votes. Those hopes were quickly dashed when I realized most were bots going for curation rewards. Adding insult to injury someone took my idea and rewrote it. Their thread took off and made over $500 while mine just stagnated and died. It was pretty darn depressing to see that happen.

So how can someone like me get anywhere on Steemit? I'm not a writer, not a photographer, and not into making video. I'm from a small boring city where there isn't anything to talk about. I don't travel. Don't know many people. The only interesting things in my life I don't want public in the first place. I can't even do an introduce yourself post because I don't have any pics of myself after 1999 and even if I did I wouldn't want them on the internet. About the only thing I am good at is helping other people with stuff and doing that around here gets no attention or votes. Even voting for others is kind of useless with no steem power and I can't afford to buy any.

What can the average person like me do to succeed on Steemit? It seems like the content I am interested in is either frowned upon for not being original or no one is interested. When you see all your friends succeeding and your not it's kind of like being the kid left out of the game on the playground. Was I right the first time that Steemit just isn't a place for someone like me? How many others out there feel this way?

Update:

Someone copied this post word for word only minutes after it was made. With my luck that thread will get more attention then this one. I'm not posting a link to it for obvious reasons.

As i said many times , just enjoy it...go with the flow...yeah i see why one may get frustrated, but i am sure there are people who did see your posts and appreciated them.

I understand exactly how you feel. Its disheartening when you pour your heart out onto a post and you get pennies, while someone else makes $1000 without even trying. Maybe this isn't the platform for us. Or you can keep trying and you might create something that trends. Either way, you can't control human nature. People are going to upvote what they like, just like any other social network. If boobs and "my life is so awesome!" is what people like, its gonna get all the money. That's just my $0.02 Steem dollars. Keep ya head up brother. :D

Edit: Removed annoying gif

Boobs are good. I like boobs. :D

Where?

easy, creating a post like this you just created and just sit and wait.

Yea wait for you to copy/paste the entire thing to try to make money for yourself off of.

What's your definition for success? A big cash payout? If your primary motivation is money, that's going to make things more difficult for you because of the psychology of motivation. I made a rambling post about this before, but you only need to watch the video to get the point:

This whole paragraph just says to me "I have a really negative self-image". It sounds like you'd be better off talking to a therapist or a family member, because SteemIt probably is only gonna make that worse.

As @royaltiffany has said, it's all about what you're trying to get out of this place. If money is what you want, you can make it slowly curating (remember that this is potentially an exponential effect), you can do mining etc. But you're probably gonna feel better in the long run if you're just here to post about the things you like and maybe you will get an unexpected reward from that some day.

I think your right someone like me just doesn't belong here. It's not worth the frustration.

That's not what I intended to say. I just mean that using the internet as your primary way to connect with people will leave you unhappy (that's true for everyone). And using this site with the primary goal of making money rather than just as Reddit with random bonuses will leave also leave most of us unhappy.

You say there is nothing going on in your town well think of steemit as your town, go explore and write about the things you find.

Yea in languages that are long dead on DOS and VMS. I can hack my way though some C and python these days that's about it.

There's loads of potential applications that would be an instant front-pager.

Honesty is a virtue. Thanks for posting.

I've only been on a couple days, but I also find it frustrating. Maybe I'm simply an impatient personality. lol I think my frustration isn't so much from not getting funded - but simply lack of exposure of my material. I posted a couple poems here:

I posted an intro and verification here:

And I posted this crazy bee-scepade here:

And my adorable cat here:

But it's like my posts are getting lost in the shuffle or something? I mean...I don't think they're BAD posts. I wasn't expecting a billiondy upvotes. But still. I wish I understood how to get EXPOSURE on here.

Just look at that cat! How is she not getting upvotes and comments?? haha
