Good content and the magical whale in the sky
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the changes this HF21 is supposed to bring, skipping as much as possible over technical terms only devs and the likes understand. Before you say anything about that, please bear in mind the vast majority of users on this platform are just like me, they don’t understand shit about linear curves and other stuff like that. And so are the millions of potential users out there we’re trying to attract to the platform. Non-technical, with zero experience in cryptos, eco-systems and stuff like that.
After a lot of reading, there seems to be a consensus that small accounts and newbies are pretty much screwed once HF21 is implemented. Authors rewards will go down significantly and, not having much of stake, they can’t benefit from improved curation rewards, either. In other words, a new user making 5 cents on a post will be making even less. We already have a problem with user retention and there’s tons of dead accounts. With even less incentives, user retention will go down even further.
The solution, they say, is forcing whales and other big accounts curate more. Write good content and the magical whale in the sky will see it and upvote generously. First of all, I’ve been hearing this a lot over the past two years and and there’s only few big accounts that I know to actually read posts and curate. The aim of HF 21 is to enforce good behaviour, they say. Seriously? What do you think this is? Kindergarten?
As I’ve said many times before, our main problem here is circle-jerking. I don’t even know if we can call it a problem, it’s just the way things are and the sooner you figure it out the better you are. We all know what sort of reward a big account will make on any post, because they have powerful friends to upvote them and this is not going to change. Why would it since curation rewards are going up with HF21? All the more reason to keep the same people on auto-vote and get bigger rewards.
I do not think self-voting is our main issue, as there are many big accounts that do not post at all - they’re happy with what they earn from curation and will earn even more. I keep reading about the new era for curation - people who have been largely absent from the platform will suddenly spend hours pouring over dozens of posts to discover good content. If you actually believe this, you’re seriously deluded, I’m afraid. I’m one of the people who manually curates and read some posts, but honestly just a few. No way I could read what all the people I follow have to say, let alone discovering new users… TLDR means anything to you?
What is the small-account holder to do in this scenario? One of the answers I’ve seen a lot is increase their own stake. Since doing so through posting will be harder than it already is, the other option is investing in Steem. I get it, investing is good, it would drive the price up… The problem is where do we find these investors?
Many, many users are attracted to this platform by the promise they can earn money. People who do not have the money to invest. To get even 5000SP you’d need something like $2000. Any idea where we might find these people who have thousands of dollars around the house just waiting to invest in a coin that’s currently at 63 on CMC. How come they’re not already here if they have that kind of money? And why would they invest in something that would require further work, at least some curation to make them a profit, when they could easily dump the same money in Litecoin or anything else and wait for the bulls?
The way I see it, big accounts will thrive under HF21. No matter if they post or not, no matter if they post a couple of pictures of their day - it still counts as good content under Steemit rules and nothing will change that.
As for small accounts? I’m not making much money as it is, with even smaller rewards why would I even bother? I know it might come as a shock to some but there are actually people who research for hours to write a good post - or maybe let’s put it in the past tense, there were, because many have left… Why waste a few hours on a post in the hope the magical whale will see it? And then you log in and see people writing the same crap over and over again getting $15…
One of the reasons I’ve been on this platform for two years is that I believe monetization is the future of social-media, but at this point I doubt it that Steemit is going to be the one that makes it.
I liked your reality take on this. Maybe we will get to see more buy this coin type post so the investors know where to go next after the user base begins to dwindle. Seems that they just do not learn, we got RC's so everyone could get a free account for their friends and family with out having to wait for weeks on end for steemit to approve accounts, That worked wonderfully during the last hard fork. Oh yeah and it was supposed to control spam, seems to me that the flagger brigades have been busier than ever since HF20.
Unlike HF20, there are no precautions to take against the proposed changes, at least I did get my Free-Pre HF20 just in case account. While it may not be profitable for self votes right now, after the fork, maybe it will be.
As there is no marketing to speak of I wonder how will these investors find us...
Well said. I agree with your points. There is a problem that some recognize, and to address the problem, we're not going to address the problem itself, we're going to just try to give more money to some people to try to get them to do something else to reduce the size of the problem, because their not already doing things to address the problem with their power on the platform. Problem = bidbots. All of the justifications for the need for HF21 revolve around dealing with bidbots. But bidbots aren't even being dealt with in the HF directly. Nothing at all. What is being done is to try to make the fat cats do something else, like to stop selling their votes to bidbots and reduce the bidbot support... lol. People with support from their rich friends just make posts about what they ate, or a game they played... and in come the upvotes and high rewards... lol... really meaningful stuff :P
Good post. Resteemed.
I think the current EIP is flawed in that it actually encourages passive investors to move from being a less disruptive ass (self voting) to being a more disruptive ass (delegating to bid bots), and it comes at a rather steep price for the potential for growth of the platform by making it more difficult for new users to enter.
As it is now though I'm afraid:
The exact opposite of what the EIP should accomplish IMO.
With two minor changes though, I believe both the unintended incentive and the unfortunate effects on new accounts can be greatly attenuated up to a point where the EIP could be effective in moving passive stake holders away from investing in bid bots while having minimal remaining impact on platform growth.
So I really hope Steemit Inc and influential witnesses will consider these two minor changes before rolling out HF21. I'm convinced the EIP can be made into something constructive.
A bit to technical for me, but I get the idea...But anyway I guess it's too late for the guys up there to consider whatever we have to say. The changes had been decided upon weeks ago when the whole plan was posted for 'debate'... only there was no debate... I guess we'll have to see...
Totally agree with you on bidbots and there's a chance their services might become a poor investment with the change in rewards. Crippling the boots would be great, but I'm afraid people with loads of SP will just find another way to get good ROI without much of an effort.

Had my doubts about steemit for a while now...couldn't agree more that the changes seem like a bad idea. Ive come too far now so am pretty much gonna watch as it all pans out.
At least I got you guys for company once my posts start earning 10 cents
Don't worry, we'll be here!
Haven't you heard? To become more decentralized the whales should get more coins. It's a pretty not-so-funny joke.
Personally, I think we should be a lot more worried about a 25% downvote pool popping out of nowhere. That's going to do a lot of damage. As if Steem needs more downvotes than it already has. Please.
Yes, I didn't get into the downvote pool problem. I don't see many small accounts starting to downvote whales, because these whales, besides their power, also have access to the same downvote pool, which makes it even easier to crush anyone who might downvote them.
Would it really make a difference for you whether you earned 5 cents worth of STEEM or 10 cents? I think the answer is apps developing a business case, creating a token for themselves and attracting large account holders to delegate in hopes of being awarded the token. Apps powered with enough SP are actually capable of being that magical whale like Musing was with the one million SP delegation from Steemit. I’ve been told DTube, nTopaz and Tasteem are pretty good upvoters of their users, too.
Money going into Apps is a great thing and I have tried a few of them myself. The only way HF21 could help with that would be making it more profitable for large accounts to put SP into that... which they could already do. Still, getting higher rewards for autovotes doesn't look like much of an incentive to start supporting Apps.

Gains from delegations are really up to the delegatees and not the protocol. I don’t think HF21 will change too much for the better or the worse. It may encourage honest curation when it comes to some whales and orcas but not most, I think.

Love it. Seems there's actually a lot of people who don't really agree with the anticipated effects these changes are supposed to bring. I specifically like the view of a non-technical person. Steem needs an offering for average people, but it seems too few people care.
I also posted about that today, maybe together we all can make a difference?!
In any case, keep steeming.

I read your blog, quite interesting and more detailed that I could manage:)
As for making a difference, I don't know... nobody listens...
