Potential Problem with Steemit
I've been thinking alot about the whales, dolphins and minnows problem.
One of the reasons I left Reddit, is because I felt like the community was dismissive of alternative opinions, and the community quickly developed into a group of individuals who fit the "redditor meme". All the content was similar, and the front page rarely saw alternative content.
That is my fear with Steemit. A small minority of individuals hold most of the power, and people who recently joined like me feel relatively powerless. On top of that, I am afraid that those individuals who hold most of the power hold a distinct set of tastes that will turn Steemit into a platform that creates "typical Steemitors" and only content that is popular with the whales will see the light of day.
DONT GET ME WRONG
The whales deserve the extra voting power. As early adopters and believers in Steemit, they should weild a mighty force. I guess I am just wondering how the Steemit community plans to address this, and how we can ensure we don't turn into a stale community like reddit. One of the things I love about 4chan is that no one gets more power and you can post anything you want. The things you see first are the things that were most recently active. (Obviously 4chan is not a community that Steemit wants to emulate, but you get the point)
Any plans for steemit to address this? How can we ensure topics or ideas we don't agree with are not excluded? I would love to discuss this!!!

Sweet!! Look forward to this! I think it is heavily in the interest of the whales to ensure that all people feel like they make meaningful impacts on the network.

I think the advantage of steem is the ability for anyone to write something valuable and be rewarded. I have never seen anything like that before.
I do think that the way the rewarding works may be optimized, but keep in mind this is the first time anything like this works at all.
That said I feel there are two challenges.
Yeah those are my two concerns. It feels so underwhelming when my vote had no influence.
Is there a way to balance popularity and the valuable voters?

Power Up! Stay active as much as possible. You can"t worry about those with more SP, or post getting more votes. it's a grind, keep doing what you are doing.
I've wanted to make some unconventional / slightly NSFW posts but I wasn't sure if it would be well-received here. The trending posts seem to be personal, heartwarming or something promoting steemit or spreading knowledge about the platform. I think these are well-deserved trending posts, but we may be falling to a pattern where diversity is constrained in a way. However I was glad to see posts like this making it to the top.
I'm glad you brought this up though, and I think I'm going to post without worrying about diverting from the trend, or worry about my posts not being well-received by the community. Since I myself welcome diversity, I know there will be a lot of like minded people who do as well, or at least some who appreciates my content.
I think a part of it is to be able to find like minded posters and the type of content you enjoy reading/watching/discussing. The navigation isn't extremely intuitive, and most sections are improperly used or not specific enough. But once you find what you like, upvote, and hopefully diversity will naturally ensure.

Well, I kinda think of all those upper-class guys as being ones who've written and blogged pretty well to get where they're at. Either that or they bought in. In my view, becoming a whale doesn't necessarily mean you think the same way or hold the same agendas as other whales, but what we might see is a heap of different whales with minnows and dolphins flocking around their ideas. Almost like when you go to a democratic vote or demonstration and there's those politicians, parties or speakers with people flocking around them because they agree. I believe this is a pretty reasonable thing to do, as we get to see what the world thinks on a large scale about things. People from all over the world are talking about their life experiences on Steemit and suddenly they don't have to live in poverty. This is truly revolutionary and a great idea in my opinion :)
True but it becomes exponentially harder to get into steemit. I will likely be a whale for someone who starts a year from now. How do we give those people meaningful say?
Steemit constantly changes and adopts. Don't worry. In a year from now, things may be completely different. Let's work on today.
I guess you just gotta be honest. Give them your opinion. People should like stuff because it's appealing to them and not just because there's money involved, but people like money too & I guess that's the truth about the world that is showing here as well. You can check google images to see if people have just copy pasted, you can copy & paste their words into google to see if they haven't just copied & pasted something into steemit, things like that. It's really up to the people to keep the trash out in the end but to do so in a reasonable manner. It's interesting seeing where it's going at the moment. Maybe the devs and whales are keeping an eye out on the social content and seeing if people on a large scale can work together to push good ideas ahead. Maybe they're seeing what generally trends with people at the moment... Could be some social experiment :P Either way, the ability to just start writing something to this and earning money straight away is a real privilege.

I rarely check r/front on Reddit as it is. I didn't start enjoying Reddit until I discovered a few subs that I liked and curated my own frontpage. If Steemit can replace Reddit in my life with that type of content, I won't care if cat gifs or Steem circlejerks are on the top until the end of time.
I will spend a few minutes a day curating new posts and hopefully be a part of a community that shares similar interests as me.
I think people need to take a step back and understand that, with so many new signups, it is important for there to be a TON of accessible content curated about STEEM/STEEMIT and how it all works.
Once we get past this phase, the content WILL grow and evolve with the community.
Agree u forgot the anchoives group , we all feeding the whales . no matter how good our post there nobody notice us . that hurt man .

I agree, steemit must to be a place with many good and interesting contents with many perspectives, but i read many post that want to flag downvote an censor many things
Definitely valid. I guess the question is how can we reward individuals who really make quality posts instead of just what the whales like?
the question is, why you visit a website? it's not the quality is popularity
I personally want diverse and dynamic opinions and dynamic content, but i guess its true, thats part of the appeal, feeling like you fit in.
