Special Cements aand Uses.

in #steemit7 years ago

Hello guys welcome back to my blog. This time I have researched and written articles about cements.

The normal used in our daily is Ordinary Portland Cement. They are used normally. But sometime some special feature of cement is needed for construction. Some of them are as given.

  1. Rapid Hardening Cement:
Attains high early strength but same ultimate strength as OPC. Used in prefabricated construction, road works, cold weather concreting etc.

  2. Quick Setting Cement:
Initial and final setting time approximate to 10 and 20 minutes respectively . Used in repair works, cold storage, pavements, static or running water etc.

  3. Low Heat Cement:
Percentage of C2S is increased and that of C3A is reduced below 6% which reduce heat of hydration and prevents cracking especially in mass concrete construction. It has initial setting time greater than OPC and is resistance to sulphates. Used in dams.

  4. Sulphate Resistance Cement:
Reduced amount of C3A and C4AF. Used in high sulphate content foundations, large footings, canals lining, culverts, retaining walls, siphons etc.

  5. Blast Furnace Slag Cement:
Obtained by grinding the clinkers with about 60% slag and resembles in properties of Portland cement. Used for economic works.

  1. High Alumina Cement:
Rapid Hardening Cement with initial and final setting time 3.5 & 5 hours respectively. More workable and high compressive strength. Used when concrete is subjected to high temperature, frost and acidic action.

  2. Colored Cement:
5-10% mineral pigments added to ordinary cement. Used for decorative purpose.

  3. White Cement:
White OPC free of iron oxide. Used for architectural purpose like facing slabs, interior and exterior decorative works.

  4. Air Entraining Cement:
Produced by adding air entraining agents such as resins, glues, sodium salts of sulphates etc. during the grinding of clinker. Used to increase workability with small water cement ratio and frost resistance.

  5. Expansive Cement:
Expands slightly and do not shrink after hardening. Compensate the shrinkage. Used for grouting anchor bolts.
