Success is a long way off for me but I am happy with the way I am going. I do have a couple of posts that have done well verse the others. I believe the reason for there success was a combination of originality and engagement. Original topic and engage the reader like you have done here msg768 and you will go far. SirKnight.

3 weeks in still trying to figure it out myself.. main thing I c so far is that u have to get a number of whales to simultaneously vote on your posts, making their followers notice and follow you, and as your rep and steem power increase people will auto vote anything you post for your $.. no doubt tho getting this ball rolling is the tricky part, with prob thousands of minnows posting the odds do seem to b stacked for being one of the fort ones..

Maybe the number of followers also matters, if you have 1000 followers, given a 250 were actively participate in your post.. Then that might be a real earnings to start..
How to get more followers is itself one of the questions here :P
