I was wondering... What if we didn't have a HOT and Trending page?
Over these last 2 days I've read so many posts covering 2 main topics. Spam, and members feeling undervalued. So I have an idea. It's mine, so it's got to be good.
If all the big dollar payouts were not concentrated in the HOT and TRENDING pages, perhaps new members of Steemit would not feel so undervalued. There is no way most of us will ever be able to get rich off Steemit and that is fine. I believe marketing for the platform should emphasise community and original content. Steemit offers more depth than the other social media platforms. Earnings should be seen as a bonus.
New members, particularly those from poorer countries, open the HOT and TRENDING pages and see dollar amounts that will change their lives. New and older Steemians see the same names constantly achieving these high payouts for in many cases, unremarkable content. They see the circle-jerk in action and know there is no invitation to the party headed their way. Not EVER. They are tempted to try alternative, dubious methods of making a buck. BAM - SPAM. (haha, like how I did that?) Other members, especially those of us who have been here around a year or so, simply sink into a deep depression and become non-functioning members of society. (Um, not!!!)
Now imagine, if we were never accosted by these lofty amounts, how much more peacefully we will exist, in blissful unawareness. It's not like the tree falling in the forest. We know these amounts are earned, even though it is not pushed in our faces, but it feels like the tree falling in the forest. Did it happen? And there is an additional bonus, people will read through more stuff instead of studying those (quite boring at times, not always) posts and attempting to comment on them in such a witty and oh so intelligent manner in hope of a crumb falling off the table on high!
Steemians will have to search through the NEW page to find accounts to follow. The HOME page will remain a comfortable social spot. The PROMOTED page has value, even if much of it is for the sheer amazement of what some wish to promote.
That would be absolutely brilliant. No comparison so no one would know and not only vote for the high payout bloggers. I still say we should start a dolphin support. Perhaps on the account that I asked you about the other day in chat???
Would it help? :) I like you, but I'm not much of a joiner.
Interesting thoughts. Thanks for sharing. I agree that it's frustrating to see reposted content or content from the same users on the hot or trending page. Perhaps instead of getting rid of them altogether, there could be new algorithms developed for what shows up on those pages and how long they stay. It is definitely nice to be able to see the popular posts and read the discussion, but I can definitely understand the reasons you give for doing away with them.
Mmmm, algorithms...I like that, it makes sense. But then I hear queenie in Black Adder "off with their heads!" Though I'm not sure if she ever said that, it's been a while!
I never use the trending or hot page. It seems to make no sense to me. There is no rhyme or reason to who gets on there and who doesn't. So they are pretty irrelevant to me.
I look through my feed and then the new page and that's it really.
I would like a page where I can select a few (less than 10) people that I always want to check out, in addition to my feed.
But the other pages are just a waste of time for me.
I don't really care what other people are earning. I'm earning what I'm earning and worrying that someone is earning more than me, doesn't make me happier or richer, so why bother with it?
That's an excellent attitude. And I LOVE your suggestion. There should be "priority friends", which would make life easier.
Could only dream of a change like you suggest ♥

When I was new here, I was very frustrated. Especially when there was a big
downvoting wave, when I looked helplessly my revenue on my posts got down from dollars to some cents. Then I began to go up in March.
Nowadays I almost never look at trending or hot, just my favourites. Rather I look at new, aspiring Steemies, with low power but much talent and inspiration.
I've been fortunate not to be downvoted, except by a few low Steem Power accounts. I love checking out the NEW page, even if I have to go through a lot of rubbish to find the diamond!
Cool!!!
I like it, makes a lot of sense. The trending pages are really quite boring as they are filled with the same old same old ....but when I was a newbie it was all I looked at too. Now I dip into the 'new' more often.
NEW is more of a lucky packet ;)
