“You have to navigate all the way to board 255 doing the same repetitive thing,” he says. “You can’t miss a dot, a prize, a blue man. You can’t die once.”

Once a player makes it to level 256, things start to get weird. At that point, the game has enough memory to display only the left side of the board, while the rest of the screen is jumbled computer code. 

Once all the dots are eaten and you’ve sneaked your way past all the ghosts, the end is quite anticlimactic.

“You get to the end, and there’s nothing to do but die,” Mitchell explains.
