Curation. Follow-up on a prior post. How to...
About a week ago, I posted a community question, which opened more doors than it closed.

Since then I have been putting my voting power into curating to test the waters. What I found out;
1.) Even if you aren't one of the top 5... You will earn a reward, if your voting power outweighs one of the other voters'.
2.) In order to get a curation reward, your voting power has to be sufficient enough to add money to the post.
3.) Your rewards are calculated based on how long you waited to vote vs. how much you voted for.
Examples in images;
This is a post I enjoyed and curated I was actually 6th voter, but placed 2nd in voting weight
In order to see the rewards, in the URL, just change the 'it', in steemit.com to a 'd'.
Click on, 'Advanced mode'.
Click on, 'vote details'. If you add up the wgt %, you'll come up with a number minus the author curation %
Here, you can see the authors curation rewards, compared to yours Since I voted past 30 minutes, I will receive a larger piece of the pie.
So, in this post as it sits now... I will get 5.97% of the rewards this post earns. Since its currently pending a $3.67 payout, I should receive 0.219 cents. ($3.67 x 5.97%)

Nice analysis! Steemd is so useful for checking on posts and payouts, especially when notifications aren't working.

Hey @rcarter, quite some research right there. I have tried my head around this curation maze, but hadn't been able to resolve the mystery. Your detailed POC is commendable. Peace..!!

Thanks for the info, didn't know about the voting info on Steemd. I'm not sure you've got it all right though. I'm digging into this myself right now. I guess you have looked at https://steem.io/getinvolved/paid-to-curate/ and it does not say anything on time, just that you need to be among the first since your payout weight will fall exponentially the more existing steem power has already voted.

And of course, it benefits the author as well :)

STOPThis was quite helpful! it just goes to show that you have to wait for the right time to upvote on a post in order to get a larger portion of the rewards as long as you have a substantial voting power.
