The Steemit Unicorn

If you arent familiar with the term "unicorn" in finance it has to do with companies (tech companies) with valuations of 1b or more. While Steemit isnt there yet - it sits at about half of this "magic" number. When $2 turns into $4 we will turn into a true unicorn.

A unicorn also refers to something rare and precious. Steemit is a community that is inexplicable - if you try to explain it to someone they usually end up rolling their eyes or starring off into the distance. This is okay - because if everyone hunted unicorns there would be no more of them.

Some posts are Unicorns. Most of us know where we sit in the general distribution of things. We could spin gold like rupunzel - put it on a youtube video and put it up on Steem at a "bad time" and have it go nowhere. Some posts have whatever "it" is and go on to trend. I have never found a unicorn post on my own account - but that's probably a reflection on me.

What do you do when you've found a unicorn? Some of us have found employees that are unicorns. In my experience I shower all of the experience I possibly can upon them. I pay them a fair wage and I give them opportunities to travel or upgrade their skills. On Steemit I always vote on Unicorn posts - but the real Unicorn is Steemit itself.

Most people don't believe in Unicorns - and most people outside Steemit -have a difficult time believing in Steemit . They are skeptical of what they think is a myth. Steemit suffers from this only if "believers" stop adding new content. I think there is already more great content than we all have votes (or eyeballs).

Steemit should be treated gently - new people encouraged without being "handed the keys to the kingdom" because they have a huge twitter following. In business I call that a "bright shiny object" meant to distract. Who cares about a twitter following if nobody comes through the site and signs up to vote.

Reward our unicorns, vote often, give people a reason to continue making quality posts - because just like the mythical Unicorn - the Steemit Unicorn is made of pure magic - and if not taken care of - will return to it's mythical home.
