Whales and Orca: Teach Me How To Fish, Do Not Just Give Me Fish

a whale is a big fish

Overview

Steemit community is a community of people classified by the stakes they hold in the community into whales, orcas, dolphins, minnows and red fishes.

However, any new entrant that comes into this community is first inundated by articles from minnows who are generally not well educated in steemit matters as whales and orcas but who are more willing and eager to brandish the little they know about the ecosystem.

This is not very healthy for the community. Even though the whales and orcas are fewer in number, I believe it is high time some of them started talking to the community in a formal way.

Whale And Orca Advice

Most often, the whales have been speaking through the dolphins and sometimes the big minnows when they want to address the community. I believe it is time they started address the community as whales and orcas. This will have a great impact on the community.

I have been opportune to interact with one or two whales here on a personal ground and those moments, I cherish because it enabled me to understand this platform better and how the founders see the platform.

Most of the whales are very committed to this platform. Infact many are witnesses or have been witnesses to the blockchain. This means that these are men with great knowledge of how this place work; men who have made sacrifices to get the platform to the stage it is now.

Unfortunately, most times minnows interact with them for upvote only, but there are a lot more they can offer the minnows beyond upvotes. The advice could be a better encouragement to most minnow community than once in a while upvote.

Teach Me How To Fish, Do Not Just Give Me Fish

Whale and orca advice will solve the problem of minnows begging for fish always. The truth is that advice is more potent if it is being given by people who have passed through the stage of those they are offering the advice to.

Right now, most of the advice to minnows are coming from fellow minnows. This often increases the chances that those listening do not take it seriously because they believe that the person advising them is not in good standing to do so.

Sharing Experience

Just few whales sharing their experience in this platform on a regular basis is enough to change the tide. Minnows will listen to whales and orcas more than fellow minnows.

The whale and orca community need to arise to this challenge. They should all adopt a strategy where by they organize themselves to write articles that generally share their experience in steemit from minnowhood to whales.

This will benefit the community in no small measure and I do hope that this be done as soon as possible.

Conclusion

We have a great number of people coming into steemit right now and there are voices. Most of these voices are singing discordant tunes. There seem not to be element of direction or purpose other than gain upvote and make money.

We need the whales to intervene and offer the needed purposeful leadership beyond just upvoting minnow articles.

I will stop here, if you consider this proposal valid or invalid, kindly drop your opinion on the comment box. Let the debate start.

I think many minnows also know quite a bit about the platform simply from being here a long time. You have to remember not everyone was lucky enough to jump in the first few months to earn crazy amounts and not everyone is rich enough to invest their own cash. I've been here over half a year and am still a minnow. I would not say I know everything there is to know about the platform, but I know quite a bit.

I also think people look at more than an 'orca' or 'whale' label. Especially new people will not know these terms and in that case, the reputation number next to everyone's name will tell them a lot more about someone's credibility.

Very right you are madam, however, there are quite some experience we can gain by hearing from the masters themselves believe me. There are still some secret about this platform you do now know. It may not necessarily be secret but information you do not have access to.

Do you know that people are running node servers to keep this platform running and making decisions that bother on the integrity of the platform from day to day. We need to share their stories of hop.

Some people invested here when me and you have not heard of steem. We need to share their story. These story to many will form the pillar of motivation and hope. It might spring up emotion of commitment and support for the platform which is needed now to move to the next level.

It will start recruiting men and women who will begin to take this platform as investment tools like pension, mutual fund, etc instead of a tool to get-rich-quick or make some handful of dollars for day to day spending.

If only 50% of the subscribers here start thinking investment, steem price will shoot up.

I definitely agree whales can have stories to tell, however, maybe we should not use the term 'whales', but instead use the term 'witnesses'. Everyone can become a whale. You can become a whale in less than a day if you have the funds for it. You can have whales who haven't even been on the platform for an entire week, so I don't feel like calling all whales 'masters'. I don't feel like calling anyone 'master', but that's beside the point.

Yes, we have very knowledgable members here, but for me it feels like it does not have much to do with the 'whale' and 'orca' terms. I do think these knowledgable people can write very interesting articles about good uses of steem, besides simply blogging to earn money. Yes, some of those are whales :-)

I agree anyone with a lot of money can join steemit as an investor , and instantly become a Orca / Whale or Dolphin ! They have a lot invested and its not up to them to school everybody , they are very busy people and some know a lot about crypto and investing , but very little about this platform itself ! What we need is fellow steemians that have a lot of experience , over a year on steemit , who also know about cryptocurency and all about the block chain to do more posts informing the new members how things work here ! There's just way to many joining at once to get a handle on it ! OR There should be a special Write up , along with the welcome to steemit page , explaining what to do and not to do on here so everyone knows what is what as soon as they join ! This is not a whales job or all of our jobs to do . 👍👍👍

I left a comment below .

That's true. We should maybe have different terms for "new" minnows and for "veteran" minnows...
I'm a new minnow though - hehe :)

Teach Me How To Fish, Do Not Just Give Me Fish : That was supposed to be the title of the article because it is also the point of the article. Just a suggestion

Good point and noted. Edited as recommended. This is democracy in action.

We are here to help one another

great post with some great comments ! I will read more in a bit im getting ready for bed ! Thanks for sharing ! Upped!👍👍👍

Thank you and have a good night sleep.

your welcome ! Im now blogging from bed and sleeping soon ! Good night , will continue reading ! 😴

Wow, so tru man!! I often find whales on Steemit who don't "post" anything...
My 2c worth - (well, it literally is 2c) - is that the Whales should be posting and helping minnows and dolphins out with their knowledge - even if it's about their ideas for the system...
You did mention "men" as whales - surrey there must be a female or two though ;)

Yes the whales consist of men and women.

I'm sure all women out there are happy you cleared that up - hehe ;) Got to be careful what we say about women hey ;)

I love Steemit but it does annoy me when Whales are made out to be paragons of virtue. At the end of the day, the vast majority of Steem and Steempower (probably around 75%) is held by a very small number of Whales, many of whom were involved in the development of the site or are/were friends with a developer. Of course there are some on here who were lucky and either bought steem when it was ridiculously cheap or who managed to get an upvote or two from a whale at this time. In both cases, a couple of hundred dollars has turned into thousands of Steempower.

Anyone joining Steemit now might as well just treat it like any other blogging platform or a diary with absolutely no expectation of getting rewarded.

Steemit appears to be just like the world in so far as 1% of the users make 99% of the money and have all the control. You can call me a moaner or someone who isn't willing to invest enough time to make it on here but I think I'm being realistic.

I read this article yesterday and this one which have made me think a bit more about the platform.

I just don't see how any amount of effort from the Whales who genuinely do want to see the platform succeed can change the fact that Steemit replicates the shitty system we live in the real world in which the extrememly small minority of people have always had the power and influence over everyone else.

What you said is from one perspective, see this other perspective. If probably you were around say three years ago and you heard about steem, even at 8 cents, I am not sure you will commit your $100 to buy any steem.

The reason is simple, you could call it a scam or ponzi or anything to justify your unwillingness to invest. If now, some people took it upon themselves to buy this idea when everyone is running away, will you be justified to call them names at this moment because their gamble of yesterday has turned into a good investment?

NOOOOO. Life is like that. The one percent of the world that is controlling the world economy as you said got there because may be their grand parents took risks your own grand parents where averse to at that time!!!

The best attitude to life is to see how you can equally be amongst those few who are making it. Opportunity is still there today which you are yet to gamble into.

See a lot of ICOs going on today. Few of them will make people millonaires in the near future. What is your attitude to them? That may determine your story or that of your grand children years to come.

The 1% who control the world now didn't get into that position because their grandparents took a chance any more than the Queen on England inherited the throne by chance (I suppose you could cite the Wallace Simpson affair but that would only have meant another bloodline family member took the throne instead).

The people who run the world belong to bloodline families who believe they were born to rule. It isn't an accident or some stroke of luck.

In the same way, it isn't an accident that the people who have the most influence and power over Steemit are those who either came up with the idea, developed the site or own shares or have some sort of stake in Steemit.inc.

The idea that if you work hard enough on Steemit and produce enough quality content you will someday be a whale is ridiculous in the same way as it's ridiculous to tell children that "if you work hard you can be anything you want".

Steemit it just a reflection of the real world with the 1% managing to convince the 99% that if they work hard the profits (rewards) will trickle down.

It's simply not going to happen in my opinion.

That is to say in your opinion that there is no need to work hard since the outcome is predetermined.

I want to use Obama as an example. Does it look like hard work made him the president of the USA or the one percent chose him from no where?

I am fully agree with you, so i voted u as my token of appreciation

Thank you...

I agree, most think steemit is a get rich quick scheme, so, even if a whale says hi it gets upvoted with the hopes the whale will return the favor.

I know this mindset will soon change with time, I guess most, like me, are new to the system and don't really understand how it works.

Nice article
