Somewhat confusing

So I have only been on steemit for about 24 hours and I have to admit its quite confusing at times. The UI is simple enough but I'm not sure I'm using it to its full potential. I understand my initial post wont get a lot of votes because of content but I'm jist getting a feel of things. I can't quite get the hang of what to post to get votes or what tags to use. If anyone has any information on that area, I'd love to read it. Whats frowned upon, whats liked by the community would also help. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read, and or vote and reply.
