Why was Steemit and its API down for the past hour?

Steem is down quite frequently, I personally use @gtg's api instead of steem official api.
If you want to surf steem when it is down you can try https://steemitstage.com or https://staging.busy.org
Is it because they're getting DDos'ed or possibly just slow deployments or something? Don't think it was a result of high user traffic.
And thanks, I'll check those endpoints out.
Someone try to spam the blockchain with empty json last week or 2 weeks ago, so the traffic is being DDOS, so it's true.
