[7 Minute Read] In-Depth Analysis and Comparison of Steemit Vs Decent Vs Yours

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

https://steemit.com - A decentralized open source social media platform, the first of it's kind.

https://yours.network - A decentralized social media platform using the lightning protocol network.

https://decent.ch - Decent is a decentralized content distribution network that is open-source and utilizes blockchain to ensure Trust & Security.

What is Decent?

DECENT is a Decentralized Content Distribution Network that is OpenSource and utilizes the Blockchain to ensure Security. It allows borderless publishing of any Digital Content. Intention of the project is to revolutionize Data Distribution on the Internet.

D - ecentralized application
E - liminated third parties
C - ontent distribution
E - ncrypted & secure
N - o borders
T - imeless reputation

DECENT has 3 functional roles:

  1. Authors: writers and music producers, ... (content producers)
  2. Consumers: readers and listeners (content consumers)
  3. Publishers: miners DECENT combines several functional layers.

While authors produce content and upload it to the network, publishers are the key in keeping the DECENT Network up and running. DECENT uses a modified Proof of Stake mechanism in order to achieve consensus of various nodes in the network. This is based on the stake of space/time ratio provided by publishers (miners) and their computer time spent by distributing keys.

How does Decent work in relation to Authors / Publishers / Content Consumers (READERS, LISTENERS, VIEWERS)?

The author uses the application to write and organize articles or add media files. When the author is happy with the result, he or she presses the “Publish” button. Author can put his/her own price tag on any content, select a part of the article that will be free to read and add metadata. The application will encrypt the content, find the publishers (independent computers connected to DECENT network running publishing software to keep the network running and receive a reward for doing so). Once content consumers find the content of their interest, they may be notified that their favourite author has published a new article, they will get recommendation based on their preferences or they will simply browse newly published content. After downloading and reading the “free to read” part they can decide to buy the rest of the article by paying a fee specified by the author.

According to the announcement, the DECENT Crowdsale is a one-time opportunity to become part of the Blockchain driven decentralized platform which is expected to become the future of media. The sale of DECENT software tokens during the crowd sale is meant to raise funds for the further development of the platform.

Why is the Decent token the only supported payment method in the Decent protocol?

Due to the fact that it was necessary to implement various types of transactions in order to secure the network and its content, we built our own blockchain. DECENT Token is used as a reward for seeders/miners and it also acts as an anti-spam protection.

From reading about Decent I found out that the Decent Token is going to become it own cryptocurrency and after the crowdsale you wont be able to use other forms of money to buy The Decent Token. You can get The Decent Token on cryptocurrency exchange markets.

Similarities with Steemit:
• They are both on an independent blockchain.
• Both are decentralized cryptocurreny social media platform's.
• Both reward their users.

Differences with Steemit:
• You can only buy The Decent Token off the cryptocurrency exchange market.
• They both reward there user's differently
• Decent is claiming it will be anti-spam free because they are cutting of third parties.

What is Yours?

Yours is often called a decentralized version of Reddit, and the main feature of the new platform should be a system of financial incentives to content creators who will be able to receive payments in bitcoins.

The idea came about a little over a year ago, when project leader Ryan X Charles left Reddit. Charles was employed as the one and only Reddit Cryptocurrency Engineer, where his primary goal was to decentralize the platform.

The platform leverages the Lightning Network to send bitcoin micropayments , "You will be able to send micropayments as little as 05-10 cents , " McKie Explains .

Given technical and economic barriers, no product has ever been able to lower transaction fees for truly viable micropayments, until now! Yours makes sending micropayments and rewarding great content, fast, cheap, and easy.

How do users earn on Yours?

Users fall into two different categories.

  1. Being a creator. Creator's post their unique work to Yours and when people endorse it they get rewards!
  2. Being a curator. Curator's discover content from the web and post in on Yours and receive rewards when people endorse your post.

"Users of the platform can Post a link or a thread to Yours," McKie explained, "and receive endorsements for their posts (tips); and any users who endorse that post can profit from their endorsement if the post goes viral, as they get a shared portion of all revenue generated from a posts virility."

Who is Yours for?
• Photographers
• Artists
• Musicians
• Memers
• Writers
• Designers

Similarities with Steemit:

• Both are cryptocurrency social media platforms.
• Both are decentralized networks.
• Both reward for discovering or creating content.

Differences with Steemit:

• Yours rewards user's with Bitcoin instead of Steem/$
• Yours has "endorsements" and Steemit does not.
• On Yours you can send super small micropayments on Steemit that is impossible.
• Yours is on the Bitcoin blockchain while Steemit is on an independent blockchain.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I think that all 3 will be successful. They are all quite different from each other. Let me know in the comment section which one you think will do the best or if you think all will be successful!

Until Next Time!

Having read these, I think Steem's main contribution is that it doesn't rely on

  1. Micropayments (like Yours, apparently)
  2. DRM or paywalls (like DECENT, apparently)

This has been the revolutionary contribution of Facebook/Twitter/Reddit et al., in that they figured out how to publish content without forcing consumers to pay for it; it looks like Yours and DECENT are just trying to roll back to an earlier age where content is paid for directly by readers, and I don't think today's readers are interested in that outdated model.

Thanks for the overview!

No problem thanks for the feedback phil!

Steem supports smaller micropayment with no fees.

Not only the instant micropayments which take no fees make Steem attractive. The combination of Steem, Steem Dollar and Steem Power gives a never before seen stability short-term as well as long-term

I wasn't aware of that, thanks's for letting me know dantheman! :)

Thanks for sharing this in-depth analysis and comparison with us @theprophet0!

I say Steemit for the win!

Thanks!

No problem! Thanks for the upvote !

Enjoyed the comparison, so an upvote was mandatory. Glad I could help!
