@tipU Curation Project Update #2: Guidelines and Many Small Upgrades

in #steemit5 years ago (edited)
Hi guys, how's it going. The @tipU curation project has almost a week now and I've got enough data to implement first changes.

Guidelines

I totally understand that "go ahead and curate best content" is not the most precise piece of information that you can get so now, as we can review how curators are using @tipu, we can start to create more defined guidelines. Please note that this list will be evolving but for now we have:

  • no higher self-curation than 50% (more about that in a moment)
  • max post age - 2 days
  • no curation of low-effort posts, like single mobile photo with few words, automatically crated content etc.
  • there's no need to curate posts from authors that have 4 mln sp ;)

Not following those guidelines puts you in danger of loosing the curator status. Apart from that I, as many other curators, are actively reviewing the curations so really, try to find posts where the authors really put some effort into.

Score Calculations

This one is still evolving. Recently the score, that could go into negative numbers, was ditched and efficiency (ranging from 0% to x %) was introduced. It basically measures the actual curation reward compared to the standard (50% of vote value) reward. In the upcoming days efficiency or curator's available mana will be adjusted to take into account self curations ratio and votes diversity.

Self curations ratio = self curations / all curations
Votes diversity = authors curated / all curations

First proposition is to take curation mana for self curation > 25% and give for curation diversity > 75%.

Non-Linear Reward Curve, Vote Value And Voting Power

I'm sill tying to find a good balance between those 3 variables.

First thing you need to know is that small votes are punished on STEEM since HF21 - if the post doesn't get at least few $ in value. In other words throwing tons of 1% votes on posts that end up in around $1 in value is wasting voting power.
That's why the higher tier curators throw by default 3%-4% so that the post can get some decent value and be closer to the reward curve.

Please expect further tweaking of the default vote, including 3% vote even for lvl 0 curators - that would mean one curation per day for those curators so let's hope they make them count ;)

Also we're also burning too much voting power currently which means that either we have too many curators or too much curation mana is available for everyone - probably both. That's why I and other curators will start to actively review curators and remove those who use the tool to upvote low-effort posts or curate mainly themselves.

Website Updates

Almost every day the website gets some updates, I probably spend too much time on this instead of reviewing the curations. One more section that is needed is the curations review page where all the recent curations will be listed with some stats - soon(TM).

That wraps it up for today, see you next time!

@tipu @cardboard i love what ur doing and i got u huge delegator around week ago, im sure uve noticed ;)

<3 Although the delegations are slowly going lower, I wish I could power down those curation rewards faster ;)

I would have thought self curating with @tipu would have been blocked or at least frowned upon - I would like to think most curators using it are able to restrain themselves about that.

I have successfully made a few votes so far - but I have a dilemma. My heart wants to support the people getting very few votes, boosting them extra then my own vote allows. But my head says I need to keep in mind the authors that always get big rewards, and then use it early on to get the best curation return. The problem is so many people are doing this now - the same authors are just getting bigger and higher rewarded posts because everyone is chasing the same curation goal.

Yep, this is probably a dilemma of everyone who has some more STEEM POWER. I suggest balancing those two :)

Thank you, I agree it is a bit of a quandary and I suppose balancing between unappreciated content and what you know will get big rewards is the only way forward. I presume @tipu needs a good curation return to keep running - so getting a good dose of those posts that will end up getting very high rewards is a necessary evil.

Sometimes you can find a underappreciated post that will get big reward afterwards :)

At first, I thought the same thing. But but then I thought that @tipu is not a charity.. I came to the conclusion that is all about numbers and there is a balance to be maintained between quality and rewards.

Yes, I agree it does seem the best option is balancing between using the curation vote to support smaller under appreciated accounts and grabbing a few posts that you know will get high rewards early to pull back some good curation return for @tipu.

You perfectly understand what I meant... which is what I’m doing, with good results. ;-)

I know what you mean, when I saw this I thought that most people are only waiting for the reward for curation, I usually use the votes to value the good work of those authors who are being abandoned, who get few votes, I am not interested in being at level 10 on tipu, this is about newsteem, we can not be so greedy and think only of ourselves, it is not about being a charity or giving away votes, nor that we can not vote to our friends and acquaintances, it is about maintaining a balance and take advantage of opportunities correctly.

But not everyone has that same thought, which is why we need not only measures in terms of content, but also for the curator.

I think we do share the same mind set, Steem as a blockchain has always been to me about supporting and helping accounts grow.

Isn't that one of the reasons some people use for downvoting is that some posts are getting too much upvotes/$$$? More or less "leveling the playing field". My hats off to the good curators who can go through all these posts to find those gems.

How can one be a curator? I can not find it back?

Love how this is evolving, @cardboard! The past couple of weeks have been crazy hectic offline, but I'm hoping to give this project more attention now (although all those numbers hurt my brain...LOL!). 😊

Jep, totally on board with the cleanup. Get that junk out!

But:
Can we make a clear distinction between trash and casualposts?

of low-effort posts, like single mobile photo with few words, automatically crated content etc.

I still think, that even there is a vast difference between those posts.
One gritty photo (which might even be plagarized) with totally broken (not even understandable) english? Okay trash.

One photo with a normal quality, which still looks good and some nice words, which are just some quick notes? A well made meme? One nicely done sarcastic comment on an article? Casual post.

Twitter became so big, because it has a maximum character count, not a minimum.

Don't get me wrong here: I'm not saying that those long posts are bad. I'm just saying that not every "short" post is bad.
(Also it will get kinda hard to find hundreds of posts per week which are hitting specific high words and "quality" criteria.)
Also those casual posts don't have to get hundreds of bucks, but a little token of appreciation once in a while, would be really nice for them.
(Who knows? Maybe that one meme is so damn well made, it will be everywhere after that.)

Agree on all points :) Probably the manual review of curations is crucial here.

Sometimes a long post can just be a long word salad without much value and another can be short but still convey a great story/idea. For me a post should tell a good story or make me want to read more from that author.

@cardboard Can we please have tipu reply with voting mana stats as a comment?

Should be easy to do :)

Easy for cardboard :)
