Should I become a comment spammer?

Would you like me to leave 100 comments in an hour that all say, "Hey, great post man!".

I mean, I might be able to make some money doing that, right?

So...why not?

great post man.jpg

Clearly a lot of people don't have a problem with the people that are leaving these generic and effortless comments, so why shouldn't we ALL do it?

I'd like to make money without any effort too!

And if I hurt the price of Steem because I don't have a long term vision of what Steemit is supposed to be and so I always sell my Steem, who cares?

stocks-crash.jpg

It's not my project, why do I care if Steemit fails one day because of spam?

At least I made some money while the boat sank to the bottom of the ocean! Right?

Let's ALL leave comments like, "Really great post man." and "I liked your article. It was good." Because why they hell not? It's so much easier after all.

I mean, who needs REAL interaction and communication anyway?

That shit is wayyyyyy overrated.

And leaving a real comment that shows I read the article and got something out of it would require effort!

Only losers work hard and put effort into things! Smart people find the EASY way... DUH!!!

If no one else can be bothered to care, and no one wants to take the needed actions to stop these people, then I'm sure no one will have a problem with me doing it as well. Right?

In fact, I'm going to set up a bunch of accounts, set up bots to leave those same comments the comment spammers leave, and let's see how much money I can pull out of the Steemit system!

really great post man!

hahahaha :D
You had me there for a second.
Of course I double checked your comments just to be sure.
Ya got me!!!

ahhhhh hahaha

you had to have known someone would try to troll u a lil bit!
i'm laughing so hard

Haha, we've been exposed, boys!

In principle I'm against self-upvoting with full power... maybe even self-voting on comments altogether. I think in a social platform, rewarded actions should be between multiple users.... they should be social actions. I feel that the platform itself should change to enforce this.

BUT, since this is what we have, I'm going to use it. For now I see it as a matter of etiquette. Upvote your own comments, but ALSO leave a "tip" on the post author. Nothing wrong with that, since good content gets rewarded and as a curator/commentor you still get paid.

TLDR: blame the devs!

This. There's a financial incentive, so I think it's fine to use what we're given; however, I agree the ability to do so can be a bit... meh. Goes against the spirit of SteemIt as I've come to understand it.

Thank you for writing that out with all that sarcasm, it almost made me wonder if you were meaning it or not so I also had to check your previews posts! I myself am new to Steem but I am mostly using this platform to be inspired to write and to read interesting content. I want to build a following so I search for ways to do it, but my main aim is to find interesting writers and content and interact with people. However, some days I find it difficult to find anything interesting or worth an upvote because the effort put into the post just seemed so minimal and when I see short thoughtless comments on great articles, that is when I begin to doubt the future of this community. I am so glad you wrote on that here cause your take on what is happening made me laugh about it for a change.

I truly admire the bitter sarcasm of this post. I joined to have a creative outlet where I could share and be noticed by like minded people. FB is fine but you'll get more likes on a picture of your dinner than you will for anything lengthy or inspiring. Great post.

Thank you!

Hi hi...What's actually really funny for me is that this system was so well thought, that this kind of people don't stay for long.

What is even more funnier is that we have people on this community who enjoy cleaning...

We will always have spammers, but it will not get worse... when 10 new spammers, another 10 probably gave up...or tried to actually support the community with quality content.

I like the pictures you posted. They are cool. You are cool. Cool post.

I am very cool. It's true. :P

I think you need a hug man

ha Yeah, the meaningless spam comments are really bringing me down! hahaha

Spammers are quickly learning that it is not worth it. The downvote/flag hammer of Thor lets folks know this type of noise is unwanted.

As for self-upvoting, this used to be Steem's default position, right? I've got no problem with it, personally. The market will find its balance, and these folks wasting SP on meaningless stuff are just going to shoot themselves in the foot, anyway.

I don't know if they are learning anything. If they are using bots, this is no cost to them. They will run bots even if it only makes them one cent per week!

I'm sure you'll get those kinds of people on any platform people contribute to. I mean, I guess you could flag those people, but really I can't imagine it even being worth spending the time to copy/paste the same comment into each post. I've only been here like 3 weeks, but seeing how my computer is a bit slow, I am happier clicking and loading up the article that seem most interesting to me. Sure, making money is a nice feature, but I'd also like to spend my time learning things that might actually benefit me. People who comment in volume just to get a penny or two need to find a better outlet for their time.
"Good post, man!" :-)

Yes, you get spammers everywhere, and every site either needs to fight them or suffer. The problem is if you're leaving 100 comments an hour, or over 500 comments a day, you will make some money, and since you only need to make a few hundred dollars a month to live in some countries.... viola. The comment spammers are here, in full force, and they are stealing STEEM and selling, putting a downward pressure on the price. It's a very serious issue and people are going to get it sooner or later, and probably the hard way, which is unfortunate but...

I see, I didn't really see the big picture that way. As more people join the platform, more and more spammers will come to make their pennies at a time and the price of STEEM will continually be depressed. I wonder if there will be a way to address this issue when they close out the beta version? I can only think of flagging for spam at this point. Maybe after x number of flags, the account get suspended for awhile, then booted off the network after a few infractions? Just a thought.

That is sort of what happens if I understand it correctly. If you get flagged enough you lose reputation points and when your account goes low or even negative you pretty much can't do anything on the site. It takes a time to get the rep points back, etc.

I think the better way will be for everyone to be educated not to upvote generic comments. Stop the rewards and the spam should stop - but the problem with that are bots. Bots will just keep spamming and spamming so those accounts need to be flagged at the very least.

It's tough- I guess a combo of flagging and education is going to be what works in the end...I hope! :)

Yep. As users choose more and more to ignore spam comments, and downvote them when necessary, the spammers will end up simply recycling Steem amongst themselves.

As you said, the rep scores also take a hit when small accounts are flagged. I just had "sexy girl" leave a spam post on my blog in the comments section. I downvoted the post and their rep score is now not so sexy at all, dropping from 25 to 15 with one flag.

I never thought about folks making enough to basically live on in impoverished countries via spam comments. This is really sad. This platform could help people like this in other ways, and so much more effectively if used in a non-abusive fashion.

Upvoting spam comments out of pity would only serve make the platform less and less attractive, successful, and quality-content-oriented, crashing the price, and ultimately shooting all of these people in the foot even more, erasing any opportunity to really pull themselves up out of poverty via Steem.

Easy for me to say, I suppose, but that's how I see it.

Well, hopefully if folks keep writing articles to address it, maybe the issue will be brought up to the surface a little and be recognized for what it is. I never thought of those folks as opportunistic, I just thought of them as lazy. But now I get a better sense of what they really are. Thanks for bringing it to light!

I'm to busy trying to make useless posts for easy money, lol. But yes i fully agree. No point in being here if you aren't going to try and really be a part of the community.

Oh! A content spammer? That's too ambitious for me. You actually have to write a post! :P

Hah hah so true. Think I need to just follow your example friend. ~_^

I'd follow your lead but wouldn't want to have everyone end up thinking I think I'm more clever than I am. Thanks for having the guts to speak honestly so we could have a real conversation.

This is comment spam by the way: https://steemit.com/@qagiri/comments

I guess you support this kind of thing. I thought I would share a link since you clearly have no idea what my post is about.

I was joking, heh. Though yes I misunderstood that you meant that specifically. Thought you meant another kind of spamming.
