5 Tips On Using Tags To Get More Exposure On Steemit

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

We get five options to use tags on Steemit, and if you do it right, you will be seen my more people and make more money in return. Here are some tips on how to maximize your five tags on Steemit.

1. Never Use Arbitrary Tags

You don't want to use tags that do not speak directly to the purpose of the blog. For example, you may be helping minnows in a blog post and use the tag "ingtroduceyourself", but since you are not introducing yourself, it isn't applicable. Don't just tag things that are unrelated... just don't do it.

2. Know What Topics Are Underserved

If you go to the trending topics list and click on "Show more topics..." at the bottom of the list it will take you to a page that looks like the one below. In this example, I have clicked the "Payouts" column to rank the top payout topics.

If you look at the list above when it is ranked by highest payouts, then you will see which topics are underserved.  The ones that have the fewer posts and the higher payouts may be some that you wish to target. Topics like writing,  blockchain and beyondbitcoin have a lot less posts and still rank very high in payouts. If it is applicable to your content, add one of the underserved topics to your tag list.

3. Open The Funnel

Your fist tag should be the highest ranking topic that deals with your blog. Like for this one, my top choice is steemit. The reason is it is the most searched on Steemit and it deals directly with my content. If you are doing a painting or graphic art design, put your first tag as "art" because it is the highest ranking topic that pertains to your content.

4. Filling Out The Funnel

Next you want to get more specific with each one after the first one. So for example if you are an artist and you painted with a beach sunset with acrylic you could do, Art, Painting, Acrylic, Sunset, Beach. Each step you get more detailed about your post. If you have music that is about love and a relaxing ballad  you could do, Art, Music, Rock, Love, Relax

You want to find ways to start more general and get more specific. If you want your first tag to be Music or Poetry, then do so, but then put Art next so it shows up on one of the most searched topics.

5. Always Use All Five

When you are posting, always use all five available tags. If you are having a hard time figuring out what to do then go search the list in the image above and find a few more that work with your content. If you can't think of one, just create one that you can use that will feature your work. Not filling out your tags appropriately is one way you will not be seen on Steemit.  So, take your time and fill them in and you will see more success.

🤣 Hi Mr @walkingkeys... Can you stop by my last post and let me know what you think? I learned today from another steemian that I should take videos landscape not portrait. So, for sure, I will fix it going forward. And, I already changed the title twice. I'm sure I can learn from your feedback. 👯👯👯

Darn it, I thought I was commenting on your post below this one! You have so many!!

Karen thank you for asking. I just went and read it and gave you a well deserved positive reply. I am posting a suggestion on here since this is where you asked for it.

  1. I think you are doing an awesome job. I really do. I just think you need to do more of it. Just more content. Not all have to be as long as the link above, but they need to add some kind of value. I think you are doing great!
  2. The title is good, but to be honest, it might work better as... "I helped save 3 people in 21 minutes... you can too" That way it doesn't give away how you did it right away an could peak curiosity. Not really something to change, but something to test in the future. It is a good title, but just trying to see what else we could do to improve.
  3. Tags - use all 5. Donate could be one... I would add Life to the first spot and then health, but that is really minor. Just make sure you use all five spots.

Great job, not much to improve on. The video should be landscape, that is true, but really you are crushing it. I think you just keep doing what you are doing for a couple of months, maybe try to write one a day and I bet you will really start moving up. Great job and thank you for your support. I appreciate it.

Thank you for taking the time to give me this helpful feedback. I will update the tag to include donate. And, will change the title. It makes sense what you are saying. I will definitely work on getting content out faster. One a day is my goal and after that, I will shoot for more. I read your post on number of articles and how you do it. I believe it will help me to mentally categorize it. Do you use the steemit or busy platform? I know in busy and esteem there is a draft section but I didn't see one on Steemit.

No problem. When I write I normally write it on Steemit or I write in word document and transfer it over.

Hi Walkingkeys, can you tell me how to transfer a document from google docs to steemit?

Or I can visit you and say hi :) @walkingkeys

Hi, lol. How are things going?

Yup, follow all these while writing my blog. However, I have a suggestion as well. It is not always recommended to go for the tags that have high payouts. May be there is a tag which isn't good in terms of payout due to the low quality content. We can target this niche and rule over that specific tag!

I agree, but with topics like bitcoinbeyond, that is not one that you may think about if you write a blog on Ethereum, but one that applies and that pays out heavily on average. Good content there is getting high payouts.
Not all tips are going to work everytime, but it is a good way to find underserved topics or emerging topics.

I appreciate the feedback. Hope all is well.

Yes, it was and will be :)

really it is a wonderful post and amazing tips. I will follow the rules of the game. upvote & resteem this stunning post.

Hey, thank you. I really appreciate it. I am really glad you found this helpful. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you so much for this information! I've been trying to figure out the best way to tag my posts and how to find the post popular tags/most underserved tags, and you pointed us in the right direction! :)

very creative .. I wish I had a penny left to give you..I upvoted anyway... You are the answer to my question. I just don't remember my question at the moment so there must be no answer. later.. this does help me with tags.. I never thought of it in this manner.

lol, thank you so much for reading. I'm glad you found some use out of my post. How are you today?

@walkingkeys thanks for sharing, it really helps to tag with the right tags, but it's still not enough. I wrote a post how to get more upvotes https://steemit.com/steemit/@emble/worked-hard-and-your-post-got-only-a-few-cents-think-your-post-is-worth-more-learn-how-to-get-more-upvotes-and-more-value-for I think it will help out a lot.

Thank you for reading. I agree it is not enough, I've actually written over 30 blogs on how to be better in all areas of Steemit. Thanks for sharing your post.

I never considered ranking from general to specific. That's useful information.

Many of my followers are also minnows, so I felt this would be a good topic for me to resteem :)

Thank you so much for resteeming. I appreciate it. I am glad you found value in my post. Thank you.

Thanks, what I want to know is how do I put that steemit logo besides my post title. I did it once (accidentally) but I have not figured out how to do it again. thanks. (You know the logo, there in your gif.)

It means that the post is converting 100% to Steem power I believe. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that is right. Great question.

You're correct.

yay! Thanks for the confirmation.

Thank you for the info. I do find some posts with only one tag sometimes. So as obvious as it seems to us, number five is really an important one. I myself haven't been on twitter so this tagging element was foreign to me till I joined steemit and it was only when I came across posts about tagging that I realize how significant this step is to get more exposure. Knowing the topics that are underserved is really an interesting one as I hadn't thought carefully on this. The examples you provide are great! This is a clearly, well-presented and organised post. Thank you for making it so easy to read and understand. I am resteeming this!

You are more than welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond. I really hope you find it helpful and help you grow on Steemit. I also put together a post will all my advice on it. That might help - https://steemit.com/steemit/@walkingkeys/the-complete-guide-to-steemit-success
