The Cultivated Apothecary: Week 7 Edition 1: Homemade Shower Cube For Congestion, Upper Respiratory Issues & Allergies

in #steemitbloggers6 years ago (edited)

Making your own home remedies can be a wondrous thing; leaving behind all the chemicals from store-bought and commercial cough and cold medications is a grand moment.

Tis the season for many different allergies, colds and upper respiratory issues. Whether you're suffering from an end of summer cold, hay fever or other allergy, or maybe your child went back to school in the first week and was exposed to more germs than they had been all summer, and know they have a nagging cough. What ever the reason for the congestion, here is a great homemade recipe you DO NOT need to rub on their chest.

On this homestead, Mr Golden D suffers from occasional allergy symptoms and instead of taking some over-the-counter medication that could cause issues with his high blood pressure (yes, we have to be careful what he takes) I started making these cubes about two years ago. I was finally running low, and since this is prime season for allergies and other upper respiratory conditions to peak, I knew it was time to make another small batch.

All you need to do is run the hot shower water or bath water and drop the shower cubes into the steamy water and viola... all done!

Shower Decongestant Cubes

Before you can make these Vapor Rub shower drops, you will need to make your own version of vapor rub.I still had some from last year, so I didn't do a video about the recipe, but I wanted to share it here with you in this post.

Homemade Vapor Rub

  • 5-tbls coconut oil
  • 2-tbls cocoa butter
  • 1-tbls beeswax
  • 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5-drops of each peppermint, lavender, rosemary and tea tree essential oils

Combine together and store in an air-tight jar. Preferably in a dark and cool place. DO NOT store in the bathroom with the heat and moisture from the bath or shower; this may break down the rub. I store mine in the master bedroom closet- it's dark in there.

Shower Cubes

Combine all ingredients below until a crumbly paste is made; then mash into ice cube trays or what ever other molds you have chosen.

  • 3-tbls homemade Vapor Rub
  • 1-cup corn starch
  • 2-tbls water (add a little more at a time until you reach the correct consistency)
  • Soap coloring- optional (just to add a little color or pizzazz to the cubes)

You can put into the freezer or about an hour to help the cubes form. Once done, store in an air-tight container and when you're ready to use... as I said above, just drop one in the steamy bath water or on the shower floor- be careful then- it may cause a slippery area. Now you can breathe better!

Depending on the size molds you are using, you should about 10-20 cubes from this recipe. I used regular sized ice-cube trays and got an even dozen.

It's so easy to make your own remedies! I hope to see more people making their own natural products instead of taking so many chemicals.

Thank you for sharing and spreading the awareness!

Oh absolutely! I love being able to make my own ANYTHING!

howdy this fine Monday goldendawne! I had no idea this kind of product even existed, it's a brilliant idea! so impressed with you!

Why thank you!

We love these little cubes! Great for the kids and grandkids too!

We are basically chemical free on this homestead. Mostly natural medicines, only resorting to pharmaceuticals only if absolutely necessary. I haven't discovered how to do insulin, yet!

Oh if only! To find a natural remedy for insulin and diabetes! Wonder what people did a century ago...

They died really early...

These sound amazing. Another one to try out for sure. I like that they can be dropped in the shower. Much better to inhale them that way and with my sensitive skin I'm always concerned about dropping to much stuff in the bath water.

VERY easy to make and great for any type of upper respiratory infection and allergy.

Maybe try a small piece at first. I h ave ULTRA sensitive skin myself but have never had a bad reaction to this. Perhaps use less eucalyptus and peppermint oils

Definitely want to try this as I suffer from seasonal hayfever & rely too much on anti histamines! Must be great for tight chests as well, thank you for sharing :)

This is good informative article for me dear friend..
Thanks for sharing it.
Again thanks for visited my blog...

Gotta love essential oils! They are good for many things!

I have a really good bath soap that has most of those ingredients. I think this might be a more cost effective solution...
