BRAAI TIME NOMNESS!!! ...yeah baby yeah!!!

in #steemitbloggers6 years ago (edited)

Like I mentioned in my post earlier today... yesterday was such a magnificent day here in Cape Town and what do South Africans do when the weather is good? Yes, that's right... we BRAAI! For those of you that are unfamiliar with the term... a braai is the South African version of a BBQ, except MUCH better ;) and we get VERY upset when people call it a BBQ haha!! Essentially, the fundamental difference is that the food is cooked over an open wood fire... anyway, I have digressed lol.

So yes, the sun was shining and the weather was sweet! (Thanks Bob!) And as many of you will know, every Thursday my mom and I rotate dinners... so one week we go to her place and the next she comes to ours. Yesterday she was at our place, so we decided to have a late afternoon lunch braai instead of a dinner. Those are always the best, because you get to absorb the magnificent of the day time weather while enjoying the fire and the general "gees" (Afrikaans for good atmosphere). They are also great because you kind of get lunch and dinner all in one, nobody has to cook at home when they leave and you get the full "party experience" and still manage to get an early night haha - that's code for I am getting old and need to get to bed earlier hahaha!!!

So, after we had grabbed all the necessaries from the shop, we came home and kicked the afternoon off with some delicious and chilled Durbanville Hills Rosé while we prepared some of the sides in the kitchen.

My mom prepared a potato salad (one of my favourites!!!) because no braai is complete without a potato salad of some kind. I made another one of my favourites and also an excellent carb replacement salad if you are avoiding things like potato or pasta salads... and that is an avocado and feta cheese mix. Nothing else.... just those two ingredients. It is heavenly I promise!

I also made a simple salsa style salad, which consisted of diced cucumber, spring onions, tomato and then a sprinkling of coriander, rocket and other micro herbs. Normally I would add other things like diced sweet bell peppers, radish etc. but well, I was being lazy haha!

The other sides we added were some simple beetroot, a garlic french loaf which also gets roasted on fire towards the end - just enough to crisp up the bread and melt the garlic butter within the loaf.

And in true South African style.... we had FAR too much meat lol! If you ever visit SA and go to a braai, you will learn VERY quickly that there is always a copious amount of meat that gets cooked and generally enough for every single guest to take home some left overs lol... I don't think it is about the food as much as it is about the men wanting to hover around the fire for longer. haha!!!

As the afternoon cooled, the chilled rosé miraculously turned into a delicious red wine hehe....

The meat was ready to rumble and our stomachs were already doing such... so the table was set - and once again, Jude's buddies were invited to join us. This round, only one of them was available though...

It was a FABULOUSLY tasty meal!!! And I love NOTHING more than congregating with my loved ones at a table to eat. There is something very special about it! That is one of the reasons why I love to bring ALL the food to the table when possible, because firstly, I do not have to "guesstimate" how much each person wants - but secondly and more importantly... it creates a far more leisurely eating environment.... when you want more, you can help yourself and so can everyone else - and because of that, the conversation goes on and on and on.... it is wonderful!!! Definitely high up there on my list of "happy places" lol ;)

After we were done with eating... we were invited to attend a "HOT WHEELS SHOW" on our front lawn lol (cuteness is!!!) we were given tickets, which had to submitted on entry lol - and there were seats and all... haha

Once the HOT WHEELS SHOW had been wrapped up, we had to take granny home and then I think everyone was pretty much ready for a shower and bed haha.... well, I was anyway ;)

It was a WONDERFUL day indeed!!!

Until next time...
Much Love from Cape Town, South Africa xxx

Dinner and a Hot Wheels Show? How exciting! 😁 I like how your rosé miraculously turned into a red wine — I want to learn that trick! 😛

Seriously, though, I think it is wonderful how close you are with family and that you see your Mom each week, at either her place or yours! 💙 The braai sounds like a very cool thing and you have a fabulous place for an al fresco meal! 😊

Hehehehe.... you know, despite the fact that there are days when I want to kill most of them... they are my family!!! And despite it all, we find ways to love and accept one another. As for my relationship with my mom... that is one i am ever grateful for @thekittygirl ... I have realised that so few women have such close friendships with their moms which I find truly sad. I have to say that ALL credit to sustaining that goes to my mom @lizziesworld.... because DAMN did I give her a hard time as a teen!!!

And yes, it really is wonderful that we can enjoy such things together now xxx

What an awesome hangout! I feel like I just spent the day with you and your family, so thanks for inviting me along...LOL! And the Hot Wheels show looks like it was fantabulous! 😊

I would give ANYTHING to have a party with you sweets xxx

Wow! Great looking BBQ lol, jk and I finally saw a picture of the famous feta salad!! Made my day!

GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! I will forgive you for that CLEAR TYPO because you like my avo and feta salad @papacrusher lol

Upvoted.

Thank you :)

Love the salad and barbecue combination.

Thank you :D

Oh I looove Braai regardless of the many types of food I can't dare to pronounce lol. I just hate that sometimes people start grilling very late so I always eat beforehand hahaha.

Greetings from Cape Town :)

Hahah yes its terrible wheb the braai master leaves a person starving!!! Very bad hosting! And lovely to meet another fellow capetonian :)

OMGosh! That salsa style salad looks so dang good

Hehehe thanks hon! And yes it was! Everything is good with coriander :D

Now I get what you meant by "Torture you with photos"
Yeah these are deliciously toturing lol

This is definitely a (morally) helthy habit to have a weekly "family reunion" (I can't say it's physically healthy though, with this amount of food lol)

God bless Africa 😀

Haha... I have bad news for you 😋 these were yesterdays pics haha... the photos from todays lunch are a far more "fine dining" kind of torture hehe... butets leave that until tomorrow... haha

As for the weekly custom... yes, agreed!!

oooh noo
You mean to say the worst is yet to come?!! :'(

Hahaha... YIP!!! ;)

All of that looks delish! I would like to attend a Braai some day. If only I can convince my wife to take a trip to South Africa.

Give me her number.... hehehehe...

@jaynie,

That was so delicious-looking I almost cried. The first picture of all that succulent meat ... I started to growl ... then salivate. I'm going grocery shopping. BTW, I love the cooking over an open fire idea ... Braai ... I'll have to remember that.

Quill

I think you should just visit us here in the deep south and then your memory will be set @quillfire 😎

@jaynie,

Visit? If you South African girls keep making posts like that one ... I'll move to the deep south. :-)

Quill

will have a place ready ;)

nothing better than a braai. We only have a balcony (city living) so we get excited to meet people with yards or gardens, cuz NOU GAAN ONS BRAAI 😅

Well hon... I think this calls for an organised visit... and perhaps we can persuade @braaiboy to join us....

@claudiaz is coming down soon.... shall we do this??? Me says yes!!

Hey @jaynie,

I'm always up for a party!

Only replying now, because I just got back from a month-long road trip... and while I was down there in CPT, I missed out on the chance to meet a lot of the CPT folk.
So yes, we will HAVE TO do another :P
