Having self respect - Information for kids

We need to have respect for others, but first of all we need to have respect for ourselves and our body.

If you want to enter a room and the door is closed, you have to knock.  If you see people are talking privately, you must not go and eavesdrop.  If people do not want to tell you something, you have to respect it.  

You also have the right to your own privacy.  Close the door when you go to the bathroom, are getting dressed or just want to be alone.  You can also decide who you want to share you private ideas and secrets with.

We are in charge of our own bodies and nobody may harm or hurt you in any way, but you also have a responsibility to look after and respect your own body and that of others.

  • Read the following ways in which you have to care for your body.  
  • Discuss it with your partner and decide on why it is a good reason to do it and also do some research on the benefits of each.  Like for instance.  Nr 1 is Get enough sleep - why do you think you need enough sleep?  Now find some extra information or a video on why sleep is good for you. This you can do with each tip on how to care for and respect your body.
  1. You need to get enough sleep.
  2. If you wake up everyday, be thankful and try and stay positive towards other people but mostly about yourself.
  3. Look at what you eat and try and follow a healthy diet.  (find out what is a healthy diet)
  4. Avoid things/substances (like drugs and alcohol and pills) that can harm or destroy your body.
  5. Make sure you have good hygiene - bath/shower every day, wash you hands and brush your teeth.
  6. Tell yourself every day and remember that you are one of a kind and very special.
  7. Do some exercise every day - even if you just play outside every day.
  8. Do not stay up too late at night.

We have said that one thing you need to do to take care of and respect your body is to stay away from drinking and smoking.  

These things can have a bad effect on your bodies.  Even if you do not smoke yourself but live with someone who smokes in the house or the car, it can also have an effect on you.

In our country we have a law that people may not smoke in public places and children under the age of 18 may not sit in the "smoker's area"  of a restaurant.

Alcohol is dangerous for all people of all ages if it is used too much every day.  (It is fine if an adult has a glass of wine or a beer now and then but not bottles full every day.)  

We see a lot of advertisements that makes alcohol look like a lot of fun, but that is not true if you mis-use this.  A lot of accidents and injuries can be caused by taking in too much alcohol.

  1. Too much alcohol can damage your eyes.
  2. Smoking can cause throat, lung and mouth cancer.
  3. Both can give you poor blood circulation (you need the blood to circulate through your body to take oxygen to all the cells.)
  4. If you drink too much you cannot think clearly.
  5. Smoking can damage your heart, stomach and liver.

As you get older, you will get in touch with more people that will try to convince you to do certain things, like smoking and drinking.

You need to make a decision and remember if you make the wrong decision it will have a bad effect on your body.  

  • You can design your own poster or pamphlet to inform other people on why and how you can care for your own body.

ONLY you can make sure that you respect your own body.  Also remember that we have to have respect for the decisions that other people make concerning their own bodies.
