Teachers are Role Models for Their Students

We are what we show. Many things are taught to the students which will be perfect if accompanied by examples of good deeds and behavior. Thus, what a teacher did can be a mirror to his disciples.

Hidayatullah in his book Guru Sejati: Membangun Insan Berkarakter Kuat dan Cerdas (Indonesian Language), said that mirror has five philosophy as follows:

  • Receive and reveal what it is

Mirror has the characteristics of willing to accept and show what it is. Therefore, teachers must have the characters of honest, simple, objective, and clear nature.

  • The right place for introspection

Because it displays a person's shadow for what it is, the teacher must be ready to be introspective.

  • Receive anytime and under any circumstances

Teachers must possess qualities, such as devotion, loyalty, and patience.

  • No favoritism or no discrimination

The mirror has an unflattering nature. Anyone who wants to reflect will be accepted. That is, no discrimination. Therefore, teachers should educate anyone without exception.

  • Wise in keeping secrets

The mirror never shows anyone who has reflected on him, no matter the mirror condition is good or bad. That is, the mirror has a clever save properties. A teacher who is good at keeping secrets, also has the characteristics of brotherhood, caring, togetherness, not dropping, and not embarrassing others.

Teacher who became a magnet for students

A method, strategy, or approach is intended to facilitate the presentation of teaching materials from a teacher to students as a lesson. However, often what happens is as good as any method used, no matter how sophisticated the technology supports it, if the teacher is not good at processing it, then it becomes unattractive.

Often we get a teacher who teaches using a laptop facility with a projector on the classroom wall, also equipped with a sound system as a sound amplifier. However, due to the lack of preparation and experience, what is presented through such powerful tools becomes static writing, simply moving the book pages to the classroom wall. As a result, teachers and students alike get nothing but read the text presented by the teacher.

However, for effective teachers, whatever facilities they have can certainly make students amazed. An effective teacher, with a rope that is four meters long, can present Biology lesson material on habitat subjects. Each group of students can conduct research on the school grounds, gardens, and field. They form a square with a piece of rope, then examine what creatures or objects are in the field. Then each group will record and present to the other groups in the class. Classes become lively, and learning goals are achieved.

What is an effective teacher looks like?

Effective teachers are teachers who are not only required to master the teaching materials well, but also must be able to present the material to the students in such a way that it can be understood easily. In addition to material presentation techniques, a teacher must be able to create a positive learning climate. That is, the teacher must be able to foster relationships among students and teacher-student relationships that help each other, open each other, meet each other's needs, accept each other as it is, mutual respect, and give each other the opportunity to develop and actualize the potentials of each- respectively.

As one parenting expert Mohammad Fauzil Adhim has pointed out, every child can be successful if educated by an effective teacher. The most important factor that directly affects students' learning activities is teachers. Therefore, if students are less passionate about learning, the first question we have to answer thoroughly before calling students' parents is how teachers manage classes and connect with their students. Besides, there are other questions we must answer, namely whether the teacher chooses personal integrity or not. This means competence alone is not enough.

Effective teachers are able to make their pupils grow effectively. This applies to all students at various levels of achievement, no matter how high the level of diversity of students in the classroom. If in class many students fail to develop their abilities effectively, it means the teacher is not able to manage the class. Worse, the teacher did not recognize the students well.

This shows that effective teaching and learning activities are very difficult to happen if the teacher is not able to manage the class well. If many of the students who show bad behavior or between students are not mutually respectful, no rules and procedures are respected as a behavioral guide, and student relationships are not very good, then the conditions in the classroom will be very uncomfortable. So teachers and students will be equally disadvantaged. Teachers should try harder to try to reach out to students, to re-establish communication and the chances are that the students will not be maximized in following the teaching-learning process than they are supposed to get.

There are so many facts that we find in our society, or even our own children, that if a student has mediocre abilities in a lesson, for example, his Mathematics is low with a score of 50 percent down, his ability can increase rapidly after three years if they learn in effective schools with effective teachers as well. While students who study in less effective schools with the less effective teacher too did not change anything after two years. In this case, arguably their ability is not well developed. Meanwhile, students who study in schools are not effective at all, and getting teachers who are also not effective, the longer the worse the achievement and they are increasingly unable to develop their potential.

Therefore, try to become an effective teacher, like a mirror for students who are always objective towards the students, always introspect, and patient in guiding the students in developing the potential secret they have.
