How Assertive Teachers Uphold Discipline to Their Students?
Be assertive is to act decisively without embarrassing the students (I'm OK, You're OK). Teachers play a dual role in learning. He should not only show a compassionate attitude to the students but also be assertive, in the sense of enforcing the rules consistently and full of commitment.
Teachers who are not assertive will not be respected by their students. They are easy to play or harass such teachers. Therefore, in these circumstances, teachers are required to show an assertive attitude.
When does a teacher have to adopt a firm attitude? Assertiveness is needed when students break rules with intentional elements, so rules are respected. Especially, if the student has been given repeated opportunities to improve, but the student does not want to do it, and even tends to ignore what the teacher advises.
The assertiveness of a teacher in the right situation can be part of the learning process. Conversely, an improper teacher's assertiveness can have a negative impact on students' mental and mental growth. Therefore, assertiveness must be made in the right situation and person. In addition to good for students, such assertiveness can also improve the authority of teachers in the eyes of students.
To be able assertive, of course, a teacher must take the steps that are structured (10 assertive steps in enforcing the discipline, I will share in the next post). Things that should also be considered by teachers in applying a firm attitude is that teachers must be good at making various alternative solutions (problem-solving). Because it could be a child who was treated firmly experienced shocks. If such things happen, the teacher must continue to run his assertiveness but provide a solution to the shocked and proportionate state of the student.
In addition to having an assertive attitude, teachers must also have the attitude of nurturing the students. Why is that?
A teacher will be exposed to various student characters. In fact, sometimes there is a clash between the characters of one student with another student. In facing of situations like this, teachers are required to protect all their students, including students who are considered naughty or often make trouble. Teachers should not take sides with any particular group or student. Teachers must be able to straighten, but on the other hand also protect their humanity (remember, not bad behavior of students which must be protected but their rights as human beings).
The Effective Assertive Action
- Use the rules and consistently maintain the rules.
- Directing children's behavior while maintaining self-esteem.
- Ensure that children are responsible for the choices they make.
- Applying sanctions if necessary, but not anger.
- Trying to teach social skills to produce better choices.
Assertive teachers have strong self-esteem. This is supported by the teacher's habits in making a clear plan, which allows him to respond to the most serious and non-serious incidents with a calm demeanor.
