Why Positioning Matters! [STEEM MONSTERS CASE STUDY]

I mentioned it before, position MATTERS in Steem Monsters. Sometimes it can be the single thing that determines the outcome of a match.

Take this recent game of mine for example.

Both me and my opponent had the exact same team, the exact same level. The only difference was a switch in the Mermaid-Medusa positions. My reasoning: always protect the stronger card. Sneak was covered by Water Elemental, while I would much rather lose Medusa to Snipe/2nd Tank, than my Mermaid, which is a pure-damage 3 point hitter. Main DPS needs to be kept alive as much as possible!

Anyway, this proved to be crucial. My opponent even had the first mover advantage, followed by me in Round 2. Meanwhile, the Nagas annihilated each other, and we ended up with this at the beginning of Round 3:

IF we had the exact positioning to begin with, then I would've ended up having 1hp Medusa instead of 1hp Mermaid. In any case, who hits first wins. Since who goes first is randomly decided, here is where all the difference lies:

With Medusa I'd have 1 card of speed 4 versus his one card of speed 4. It means I have 50% chance to hit first, hence to win.

With Mermaid I have 2 cards of speed 4 versus his one card of speed 4. It means I have 67% chance to hit first, hence to win.

THAT'S A 34% WINCHANCE INCREASE!

We had the exact same lineup, yet the fact that the stronger card has been better protected in my team, it gave me the edge needed and bettered my odds to win.

Details like these are the ones that matter. Once you get the hang of the basic mechanics, you will always seek more and more ways to improve your edge over other players. Always be alert, don't get complacent and keep on grinding!

PS. This Blue Team was a pretty good one. It was lining up only Level 1's, yet during the last Conflict of Season 2, I managed to break into Silver III with it.
PS2. Positioning Pro Tip #237: If you play Life and use the Knight, put him 2nd or 3rd or even more behind. The longer Inspire lasts, the more it compounds over the rounds. Silvershield Knight is more of a utility card rather than a pure tank imo. This works especially well during this Super Sneak Conflict. Use him mid-position. 👌

Good tips, the game has more strategy that initially seems, with the upcoming changes of the rules in the battle system (and pairing system) this will be a lot more complex, the rules of combat will change at every game so, we will need more splinters to be competitive and adapt our team to them. Can't wait for the next season ^^.

Season 3 and beyond will be a completely different world. BUT! What we have learned up till now will help us keep and improve our edge. The fact that conflicts change with each battle means that one has to be more accustomed to each conflict, and have a better understanding of the underlying mechanics.
