Terrarium is a miniature like forest within a closed container usually a glass cube (like aquariums), bottle or a jar. It has a complete ecosystem which means you don't need to water the plants you have in there. They just rely on the water cycle process and the decomposition and new life cycle taking place inside the container.

In this blog, I want to show how I did my own terrarium inside a mini Mason jar I bought for less than a dollar.

So let's start!

Prepare the following materials and tools:

  • Jar with Lid
  • Charcoal
  • Pebbles
  • Healthy Soil
  • Little Plants/ Seedlings
  • Moss
  • Water
  • Stick
  • Used Cloth (optional )

Process

Step 1: Prepare the Terrarium Bed

Clean the jar.

Make the terrarium bed out of charcoal and pebbles. This will maintain the water inside the terrarium. (Keeps the moisture of the soil and humidity of the container )

This is optional, cut a piece of cloth or even a wired gauge /chicken wire to fit inside the jar.
This will separate the soil to be added from the terrarium bed.

Add a healthy soil on top. And sprinkle a right amount of water after.

Step 2: Plant the plants and/or moss inside the Terrarium

For the plants I want to put inside the terrarium, I pick up the small cactus, moss and a fern-like grass on our garden.

Make sure that the plants are healthy and don't break much of it's root if it has.

Cover the roots with soil and make sure that you plant them firmly so they wouldn't move and be ruined inside when a little movement was made on the jar.

Step 3: Finishing the Scape and Covering the Terrarium

Add pebbles and charcoal to accentuate the terrarium and also to keep the terrarium's humidity (Charcoal)

And the last part, cover the jar with it's LID.

I will post an update on this little terrarium every week and let's see if we can make it to live more than a month, and a year and even a decade!!!!

I hope you like it guys!

that looks cool. Hope it grows healthy. It's like having a little garden in a bottle that you can put anywhere. It's a basically a portable garden. :)

Thank you Robiney 😍😊
