Hiking up to the Rila Mountains & Lakes |

Day 1: Hitchhiking then Hiking

After the festival we returned to Sofia and attended the UK work visa appointment. They took Matt's passport and said it'll be returned when the application process is finished (about 2 weeks later!). We decided to go hiking up the Rila Mountains.

During the communism time, owning a car was difficult and the wait-list could be up to years. Everyone helped each other and hitchhiking became very common. Now they are in the "post-communism" phase, people continue to give and hitch rides.

From Sofia we took the tram to reach the furthest point out of the city and found a nice place to lift our thumbs. It was a cool day, but sunny enough to enjoy the sun's ray. Soon we had two different cars stopped for us, and by the third car, it was going the same way! We hopped into her car and made our way south. She spoke English so we shared our 16 months long travel story into an hour's drive. She kindly bought us frappes and croissants from the petrol station by the highway.

Waiting for the tram in Sofia

Our amazing driver taking us the extra mile!

Instead of dropping us at the turn off, she kindly detoured for us, "doing her good deed for the day". After another ride up to the ski resort village, we were able to start ascending the mountain. The tracks were well made and signed but we were disappointed they used plastic banners tied to trees to mark the route.

The atmosphere in the forest was quiet and peaceful. It was a good day to start our three days hike.

Day 2: Lakes, Ups and Downs

Morning was very cold so we got up quickly to get going.

Since a picture is worth 1000 words, here's the next 8000 words.

Day 3: Back Down

The forecast didn't look too friendly so we decided to hike down to the nearest hut and get more information. The hut offered basic food and free WiFi. The food weren't Michelin stars quality but at least they weren't overpriced: omelette for 2 Leva, fries for 3 Leva (roughly the same as NZ dollars).

After checking the forecast we decided to descend the mountain and move on to our next adventure. The gears we bought with us weren't that great for this (and we were really sore from Day 2's hike). We said goodbye to our new friend Adam from Czechia. He is going to continue hiking another week. Hope he keeps dry!
