Earth is losing its ice cover? How?
Ecologists and climatologists have warned that soon millions of people will lose their homes - especially in coastal areas - because of melting ice, which in turn leads to rising sea levels.
"The Earth is losing its ice cover, and the evidence is overwhelming," said Professor Tula Moon in the University of Colorado Boulder.
Glaciers all over the world are disappearing, which should be of international concern. Among many impacts, millions of people will be forced to leave their homes because of rising sea levels, vital sources of water will dry, and wild animals will lose their food sources and shelter.
The US Geological Survey suggests that the Montana Glacier National Park on the border with Canada has lost more than 120 glaciers in the last century.
Dr Tuila Mun explained that this was due to a pattern that is replicating worldwide from the Antarctic Peninsula to the province of Patagonia in the southernmost corner of South America, the Himalayas, Greenland and even the Arctic.
"The evidence is compelling that the earth is losing its ice, and most of that ice cannot be compensated," she wrote.
"Unless concrete action is taken to respond to climate change and mitigate global warming, we will still see sea water being swallowed up on the streets of Miami, and we expect this pattern to continue for decades, centuries and thousands of years," she said.
