On 10 June 1921, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was born, signalling the start of a truly remarkable life that would ultimately span almost an entire century. Born in Mon Repos, Corfu into Greek and Danish royalty, Philip was originally bestowed the title of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark; however, his title was updated when he became a British citizen. He officially became Duke of Edinburgh upon marrying the future queen, Princess Elizabeth, in 1947. He would remain at his wife’s side for the next 74 years, a devoted supporter of Her Majesty The Queen until his passing earlier this year. He was the longest-serving consort of any reigning British monarch in history.

2011 90th Birthday of Prince Philip £5

Back in 2011 a UK £5 coin was issued by The Royal Mint in celebration of the 90th birthday of Prince Philip. The coin’s design features a specially commissioned portrait of Philip by Mark Richards FRBS.

Excitingly, just 18,730 of these coins were struck in Brilliant Uncirculated presentation packs making it one of the rarest £5 coins ever. Because of this, the coin is extremely sought after by collectors and is virtually impossible to get hold of on the secondary market.
