In 2016 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the First World War and to recognise the Army's contribution in shaping the outcome, the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Brilliant Uncirculated Army £2 Two Pound Coin. The Royal Mint released the £2 coin to honour the army during World War I. This was the third coin in a five year series, taking us on a journey from outbreak to armistice.

In 1914, as Europe finally went to war, the call went out to enlist. The British Army, unlike the French and German armies, was made up exclusively of volunteers. 30,000 volunteers signed up each day, in response to Lord Kitchener’s famous recruitment drive.

Those who enlisted together were permitted to serve together in ‘Pals Battalions’ with workmates, friends and neighbours, standing side by side to defend their communities. Designed by Tim Sharp, it represents the Army and is a stylised image of a ‘Pals Battalion’.

With a total of 9,550,000 coins minted(inc collectors sets), and with 6,112,000 entering circulation if you listed your First World War Army coin on eBay, you could expect to receive £4.62 which includes an assumed postage charge of 2 pounds. So theres a small profit to be made over face value. But..... and this is where it gets juicey, it appears that some coins had the words "the whole city in dreadful flames" etched on the outer rim. These were meant for coins commemorating the Great Fire of London. The correct inscription should say "for king and country".

Coins that have been made with mistakes on them are called "Mule coins" and are extremely valuable to collectors. This is because they could be only one of a handful, or one of a kind, so they're hard to find.

In numismatics, a mule is a coin or medal minted with obverse and reverse designs not normally seen on the same piece. These can be intentional or produced by error. This type of error is highly sought after by collectors, and examples can fetch high prices.

The first 2016 Army £2 coin showing the incorrect edge inscription was found recently. It was discovered by an Eagle-eyed collector in a bank bag of change in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It is not known whether the error occurred in coins struck for circulation or those that were sold by the Royal Mint in collectable packs. Anyone with one of the collectors coin packs should be able to see the edge of the coin without opening the packaging. New discoveries often attracted the highest prices initially, simply because we dont know how many "mule" coins are out there and collectors rush to get their hands on these rare coins. If you find one of rhese in your collection or even floating around in your pocket change one day, is exchanging hand extremely quickly at the moment and you wont struggle to find a buyer. Starting prices for this coin start high and get higher.... The coin itself could be worth £100, which is 50X its face value, so keep your eye out for one.
