Reds March On To Semis
Manchester United have progressed to the semifinal of the Europa League after overcoming Spanish side, Granada 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.
Goals from Edison Cavani and a Vallejo own goal ensured the Reds continue what has been a decent season for manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Granada came into the game knowing they had to win by a 3-0 margin for any hopes of making it into the semifinal, after losing the first 2-0 at home.
The visitors despite having possession in the opening stages failed to create any meaningful chance. It was Man United who created the first real chance on the night to open scoring. Edison Cavani hitting a left-footed shot into the bottom corner after collecting a beautiful back headed pass from Paul Pogba.
With the goal, Cavani has now scored in 11 consecutive seasons in European competitions and his first in the Europa League since he did same Napoli against PSV in 2012.
Although Granada failed to create any reasonable goalscoring opportunity, they will rue the numerous half chances created that were not properly utilized. Their best chance, arguably, came from a deflected Wan Bisaka header towards his own goal.
United's second goal came in the closing stages of the game as Granada defender, Jesus Vallejo headed a Luke Shaw cross into his own net. It was their first clean sheet in three consecutive knockout stage games in European competitions since 2008.
The win means Man United have reached an all-time 18th semifinal in European competitions, second best only to Liverpool who have reached 19, among English teams.
Manchester United will now face Roma the semifinal, with the first leg coming at Old Trafford in a fortnight.
